Freepik drops an open image model trained on 100% licensed data
Freepik just released F Lite, a 10B-parameter open image generator built with Fal.ai and trained entirely on 80 million licensed, safe-for-work images. Designed to sidestep copyright headaches, it comes in standard and texture flavors, though running it locally requires a beefy GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM.

F Lite is an open-weights AI image generator developed by Freepik in partnership with Fal.ai. Packed with roughly 10 billion parameters, the model was trained exclusively on an internal catalog of around 80 million commercially licensed, safe-for-work images.
If you want to generate images for client work or commercial apps without the lingering dread of copyright lawsuits, this model is built specifically for that lane.
Two flavors and how it was built
The team released F Lite in two distinct flavors depending on what you need: standard and texture.
The standard version plays it safe. It sticks closely to your prompt and produces predictable outputs, though the overall style leans less artistic.
The texture version is looser. It is noticeably more prone to errors, but in exchange, it delivers richer surface textures and more inventive compositions.
Under the hood, Freepik and Fal.ai trained the 10B model using a cluster of 64 Nvidia H100 GPUs over two months. Every single one of the 80 million training images was fully licensed, sidestepping the controversial web-scraping tactics typical in generative AI.
Specs, hardware, and raw performance
Running F Lite on your own machine takes serious hardware. Because of its 10B parameter size, the model demands a GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM just to get off the ground.
Freepik is completely upfront about its capabilities. The company makes no claim that F Lite will beat out top-tier generators like Midjourney V7 or Black Forest Labs' Flux family.
The point here is not peak aesthetic fidelity. The team designed F Lite as an open starting point so developers can fine-tune, adapt, and build on a legally clean foundation without proprietary lock-in.
Why it matters
While AI giants continue to battle artists and publishers in court over fair use defenses, enterprise users are increasingly terrified of downstream liability.
F Lite is definitely not the model you pick to win a beauty contest against Flux or Midjourney. But for commercial teams and indie hackers who need a clean, legally bulletproof base to fine-tune, having a fully licensed 10B open model is a genuinely useful insurance policy, provided you have the 24GB GPU to run it.
