Freepik just rolled out a new AI-powered background removal and replacement tool, and it aims to fix the biggest headache in photo editing: mismatched lighting.

More than cutting out backgrounds

Announced on X, the new feature lets users strip out an existing background and drop their subject into a new one, whether that means a basic solid color or a freshly generated AI scene.

Crucially, the tool integrates Relight technology, which appears to leverage tech from Magnific. Instead of just pasting a cutout on top of a new landscape, it recalculates how light hits the subject so the final composition actually blends together. The feature is available immediately on Freepik.

Why it matters

Basic cutout tools are everywhere now, and frankly, removing a background is practically a solved problem. The real bottleneck for e-commerce creators and designers has always been making the subject look like it actually belongs in the new environment.

By packaging AI generation and relighting into a single step, Freepik is tackling the most tedious part of product staging. If the relighting holds up in everyday use, it could save sellers hours of manual tweaking in Photoshop.
