ChatGPT gets a humanoid body with Figure 01

Published Reach 34

Figure just integrated OpenAI's vision and speech models into its Figure 01 humanoid robot, enabling it to hold full conversations while executing physical tasks. The robot can process visual context, follow verbal commands, and even pauses naturally while speaking. Why it matters: Bringing ChatGPT into a physical frame turns generative AI into an embodied agent, accelerating the race toward real-world AGI.

For over a year, ChatGPT has been trapped behind browser tabs and smartphone screens. Now, Figure has officially given it a physical body.

Robotics startup Figure just showcased its humanoid robot, Figure 01, having full, real-time voice conversations with a person while executing physical tasks based on verbal instructions. The voice system is powered directly by OpenAI.

In the demo, the humanoid's vocal cadence closely mirrors ChatGPT's built-in voice mode. It even includes natural conversational hesitations and slight stutters between words, giving it an eerie, human-like feel rather than the robotic prompts of legacy automation.

Splitting the brain and the muscle

The breakthrough here lies in how the software and hardware are integrated.

Figure's proprietary neural networks handle the fast, low-level, dexterous physical actions, controlling motors and joints with fine-grained precision. Meanwhile, OpenAI's models serve as the high-level brain, processing visual inputs from cameras and parsing natural language prompts.

In simple terms, OpenAI looks and thinks, while Figure's system moves. This makes Figure the first humanoid manufacturer to deploy conversational speech and real-time physical reasoning together in a functional prototype.

The demo follows Figure AI's massive $675 million Series B round, backed by a heavyweight roster that includes OpenAI, Microsoft, Nvidia, Intel Capital, and Bezos Expeditions. Sam Altman previously noted that hardware platforms are finally catching up, creating the perfect foundation to pair with frontier language and video models.

Why it matters

We think this demo flips the script on how robotics companies will build moving forward. Historically, companies spent decades perfecting actuators, hydraulics, and walking physics while ignoring high-level reasoning. By outsourcing the cognitive stack to OpenAI, Figure is moving exponentially faster than traditional hardware outfits.

This also puts tremendous pressure on competitors like Tesla's Optimus and Boston Dynamics' Atlas. Neither has shown a unified conversational and visual intelligence layer at this level of polish. Musk's recent legal friction with OpenAI might look very different when viewed through the lens of this emerging robotics turf war.

However, the real test will be reliability outside scripted environments. A hallucination in a text chat is an annoyance, but a hallucination in a hundred-pound metal robot handling heavy tools can cause real physical damage. If Figure and OpenAI can bridge the gap between impressive kitchen-table demos and unforgiving factory floors, the road to physical AGI just got a whole lot shorter.
