Fei-Fei Li warns California's SB-1047 will hurt AI

Published Reach 39

"Godmother of AI" Fei-Fei Li just voiced deep concerns over California's SB-1047 safety bill. While acknowledging the legislation is well-intended, Li warned that it won't actually solve the risks it targets—and will instead severely harm AI academia, startups, and the open-source community.

AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li is sounding the alarm on California’s controversial AI safety bill.

Li publicly expressed deep concerns regarding California’s SB-1047, known as the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act. While acknowledging the legislation is well-intended, she warned it will fail to achieve its goals and instead cripple essential parts of the ecosystem.

Friendly fire on open source

Writing in Fortune and posting on X, Li stated the bill will deeply harm AI academia, "little tech" startups, and the open-source community.

Tech giants have armies of lawyers and deep pockets to navigate heavy regulatory burdens. Academic labs and smaller developers do not. Imposing sweeping liabilities on model developers risks freezing out the very grassroots researchers and open ecosystems that fuel innovation.

Why it matters

Fei-Fei Li's pushback dismantles the easy narrative that opposition to SB-1047 is just big tech companies lobbying against public safety. When an academic heavyweight known as the "Godmother of AI" steps in, lawmakers have to listen.

In our view, the core flaw of bills like SB-1047 is that their compliance costs act as an accidental moat for incumbents. Regulating catastrophic risk is necessary, but doing it in a way that penalizes open-source builders and universities risks handing total control of frontier AI to a handful of well-funded tech giants.
