Elon Musk claims Grok 5 could achieve 'true AGI'

Published Reach 39

Elon Musk just claimed that xAI's upcoming Grok 5 has a shot at achieving "true AGI," adding that he has never felt that way about any project before. The comment arrived as he quoted benchmark results showing Grok 4 beating GPT-5 in simulated sales tasks. While xAI has yet to provide concrete specs or launch dates, Musk is already setting expectations sky-high.

Wait until you see Grok 5, says Elon Musk.

Following benchmark results showing xAI's Grok 4 outpacing OpenAI's GPT-5, Musk took to X to hype the company's next flagship model. Musk stated that he thinks Grok 5 has a shot at being true AGI, adding that he hasn't felt that about anything before.

Beating GPT-5 at digital sales

The bold claim came in response to benchmark data shared by user @Prashant_1722 on Vending Bench.

According to the posted results, Grok 4 took the top spot over GPT-5, generating roughly twice the sales volume and 31% higher revenue. The model reportedly outearned GPT-5 by more than $1,100 while maintaining stronger sales momentum and operational stability over long horizons.

Musk seized on those simulation wins to pivot straight to what's coming next.

Why it matters

Musk is no stranger to aggressive timelines and hype, but openly calling Grok 5 a candidate for "true AGI" sets the bar extraordinarily high for xAI.

For businesses watching the AI race, the Vending Bench figures show that frontier models are being evaluated on tangible economic tasks rather than just academic tests.

Still, in our view, winning a simulated vending competition is a long way from general intelligence. Until Grok 5 actually drops, we consider this more of Musk's trademark marketing than a verified leap toward AGI.
