ElevenLabs drops a pocket reader with uncanny voices
ElevenLabs just rolled out its new Reader app on iOS and Android, letting users listen to any article, PDF, or newsletter read aloud by its lifelike AI voices. It is free to use for the first three months. While it currently only supports English, offline mode and 29 additional languages are already on the roadmap.
We have all done the awkward sidewalk dance while trying to skim a morning newsletter and dodge oncoming commuters at the same time. Podcasts are great, but the vast majority of information we actually need to read for work and life is trapped in text.
AI voice leader ElevenLabs launched its dedicated mobile app, ElevenLabs Reader, available globally on both iOS and Android.
Any text on your phone, narrated by top-tier AI
The app lets users turn virtually any written material on their devices into audio on the go. That includes web articles, PDFs, ePub files, and newsletters, all narrated using voices from ElevenLabs' extensive voice library.
Beta testers highlighted the app's ability to maintain consistent tone, accents, and pacing over long, technical articles, avoiding the robotic drift typical of legacy text-to-speech engines. Visually impaired testers also praised the app for properly labeled buttons and accessible navigation.
ElevenLabs is making the app free to download and offering the first three months of usage completely free.
There are clear early limits. The app currently supports only English, though ElevenLabs plans to expand it to all 29 languages available in its multilingual model soon. Offline playback, audio snippet sharing, RSS feed integration, and AI summarization are also on the near-term roadmap.
Why it matters
We think this is a pivotal move for ElevenLabs as it transitions from an infrastructure API provider into an end-consumer brand. Making the best voice model is only half the battle; owning the actual interface where millions of people consume information daily is where long-term defensibility comes from.
For knowledge workers, students, and accessibility users, the app offers immediate, tangible utility. Listening to dense research papers or newsletters during a commute with voices that genuinely sound human makes reading backlogs much easier to tackle. With three months free, it is an easy recommendation to try right away.
For the broader ecosystem, this is a shot across the bow for established read-it-later and text-to-speech apps like Speechify and Pocket. When the frontier model creator builds its own clean consumer interface, third-party wrappers face intense pricing and feature pressure.
The real test will come when the free promotional window ends. High-fidelity voice synthesis is compute-heavy, and how ElevenLabs prices ongoing consumer tiers will decide whether this becomes an indispensable daily utility or a luxury niche tool.
