ElevenLabs drops licensed music API for devs
ElevenLabs just rolled out the Eleven Music API, pitched as the first music API for developers trained on licensed data and fully cleared for commercial use. It lets teams plug AI music directly into their products and workflows. The company also noted that creators have already generated over 750k songs since Eleven Music debuted.
AI music generation is everywhere, but most developers have stayed far away from plugging it into real products out of fear of lawsuits from major record labels.
ElevenLabs is tackling that headache head-on. The voice AI giant has officially rolled out the Eleven Music API, pitched as one of the first music APIs built specifically for developers using licensed training data and cleared for broad commercial use.
Commercial clearance in a few lines of code
The new API lets developers turn simple text prompts into full songs in seconds. It handles both vocal and instrumental tracks across any genre, with controls for track length, structure, and language.
Adoption is moving fast. While ElevenLabs initially posted on X that creators had generated over 750,000 songs, its blog post updated that tally to more than 1 million tracks. To sweeten the deal, API usage is 50% off for the rest of August.
Commercial rights are cleared for use cases like casual video games, meditation apps, and digital ads. However, high-stakes productions like film and TV still require an Enterprise plan under its rights structure.
Early adopters are already shipping
Several commercial partners are already showing off integrations.
Video editing platform VEED uses the API to power its AI background music tool, which scans a video's transcript and automatically builds a track matching the tone and topic. Creative agency AMP integrated Eleven Music into its Sonic Hub platform for brand audio campaigns, while Hedra Labs is using it to animate avatars with custom singing voices for music videos.
ElevenLabs also launched Jingle Maker, an internal demo tool that cooks up a branded song from a social profile or website link in two clicks.
Why it matters
We think this is a masterclass in market positioning. While competitors like Suno and Udio remain locked in messy legal battles with record labels, ElevenLabs is selling peace of mind. For enterprise teams and indie builders, legal compliance is not a nice-to-have; it is the entire gating factor for deploying AI music.
If you build audio tools, games, or automated content pipelines, this is worth testing immediately, especially with the 50% discount in August. It turns custom music from a multi-day bottleneck into a simple API call.
That said, the carve-out requiring enterprise plans for film and TV shows the limits of current licensing deals. Major rights holders are still holding back their most valuable territory, and it remains to be seen whether ElevenLabs can keep its music quality competitive without running into licensing walls down the road.
