ElevenLabs adds text-only Chat Mode to its agents

Published Reach 50

ElevenLabs just rolled out Chat Mode, letting developers build text-only AI agents or toggle existing voice bots into chat. It is built for situations where typing is preferred or precise data like order IDs and emails are required, deploying in minutes with a single line of HTML or SDK.

The leading AI voice platform ElevenLabs just launched a feature that completely silences its bots.

ElevenLabs introduced Chat Mode for its Conversational Agent platform, allowing users and businesses to deploy text-only AI assistants in minutes.

For a company whose entire brand is built around ultra-realistic human voices, stripping away the audio might look backward at first glance. But anyone who has ever tried to read a complicated tracking number out loud to an automated customer support line knows exactly why they did it.

When typing beats talking

Voice is fantastic for casual conversations and hands-free tasks, but it is notoriously painful for precision.

Trying to spell out a complex email address, a 16-digit order ID, or a password over the phone usually turns into an exercise in frustration. Chat Mode exists specifically for these moments where typing is simply faster and less error-prone.

It also opens the door to hybrid workflows. A text agent can handle the initial intake, grab the sensitive details in chat, and then hand the customer off to a voice agent if the issue requires deeper troubleshooting.

Setting it up takes almost zero heavy lifting. If you already have an existing ElevenLabs voice agent running, you can toggle it to text-only with a single click. For new setups, it embeds onto a website using a single line of HTML or integrates via SDKs and APIs.

Why it matters

We think this is a very smart concession to reality from ElevenLabs.

Many voice-first AI startups trap themselves in an all-audio dogmatism. But real-world customer support is fundamentally multimodal. Forcing customers to speak in noisy offices or on the train makes no sense, just as forcing them to type out complex emotional complaints feels cold.

By adding text-only mode, ElevenLabs moves from being a voice provider to a full-stack conversational platform. Businesses do not want to manage one vendor for live chat and another vendor for phone support. Using the same knowledge base and the same backend logic across both channels is a major operational win.

That said, entering text chat drops ElevenLabs straight into the most crowded corner of enterprise software. Voice is where ElevenLabs has a real technological moat. In pure text, it is competing against thousands of chatbots built on raw LLM wrappers. The success of this move will depend entirely on whether businesses actually value having voice and text unified under one roof.
