Edit Banana turns static diagrams into editable DrawIO files
Edit Banana just released a tool that converts flat diagram screenshots and PDFs into editable .drawio and .pptx files. It uses SAM3 alongside VLLM/OCR to break down images into editable XML elements in seconds. Visual formatting can take a hit on complex graphics, but it beats recreating architecture charts by hand.
Staring at an architecture chart inside a slide screenshot and realizing you have to redraw the entire thing just to fix a typo is universally frustrating. Edit Banana was built specifically to turn these "dead" flat images back into workable graphics.
Turning pixels into XML in seconds
Using it is straightforward. You upload a diagram screenshot or PDF, wait a few seconds, and download the resulting .drawio or .pptx file. Open it in DrawIO or PowerPoint, and the previously flat elements and labels become movable and editable objects.
Under the hood, Edit Banana combines SAM3 for segmenting visual shapes with VLLM and OCR models to parse text, packaging the whole layout into standard DrawIO XML code.
Why it matters
For developers and project managers who regularly update legacy documentation, this cuts out hours of tedious diagram recreation.
Skeptics in the community argue that forcing flat bitmaps into vector XML can butcher intricate layouts, suggesting that text OCR paired with inpainting or future direct image editing might ultimately be cleaner approaches.
Still, we think that while visual fidelity can take a hit on denser charts, walking away with an actual editable project file right now is far better than facing a blank canvas.
