Duolingo adds interactive video calls and playable mini-games

Published Reach 31

Duolingo just introduced Video Call and Adventures at its Duocon 2024 conference to make language practice more interactive. Duolingo Max subscribers can hold real-time, adaptive conversations with Lily across English, Spanish, and French, while new mini-games let learners practice everyday tasks like ordering coffee in a low-pressure game environment.

Language learners know the exact moment panic sets in: you have spent months tapping multiple-choice buttons, but the second a real person asks for directions, your mind goes completely blank.

At its annual Duocon 2024 conference, Duolingo rolled out two major AI-driven features designed to kill that conversation anxiety for good.

Video calls with Lily and RPG quests

The headline feature is Video Call, an interactive tool that lets Duolingo Max subscribers have spontaneous, real-time video chats with Lily, the app's famously unenthusiastic purple-haired character.

Duolingo says the underlying AI simulates natural dialogue and adapts on the fly to the learner's skill level, giving beginners a zero-pressure sandbox to practice speaking before testing their skills in the wild. The feature is initially rolling out to Duolingo Max subscribers learning English, Spanish, and French.

Alongside calls, the company unveiled Adventures, an exploration mini-game coming to iOS and Android. Instead of isolated flashcards, learners navigate dynamic storylines in the Duolingo universe, practicing practical scenarios like clearing passport control or ordering a cappuccino with characters like Oscar and Lily.

Duolingo is also pushing deeper into music. The company revealed a three-octave portable electric piano built with Loog, priced at $250 for pre-order, alongside a Sony Music partnership that brings licensed pop hits into its music course.

Why it matters

Duolingo has mastered the art of getting people to open an app every single day, but turning daily streaks into real-world speaking fluency has always been its Achilles' heel.

Putting Lily on the other end of a simulated video call is a clever move. Practicing with a human tutor is expensive and intimidating for beginners, while an AI avatar offers an infinitely patient, judgment-free conversational partner. Keeping the feature gated behind Duolingo Max also gives free users a compelling reason to upgrade.

For the broader edtech space, this signals a shift from static grammar drills toward immersive, multimodal AI roleplay. Language apps that rely purely on flashcards will struggle to compete with platforms that feel more like playable video games.
