Deutsche Telekom brings AI to the masses with a 149€ phone

Published Reach 36

Deutsche Telekom just launched its budget-friendly T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2 across ten European countries, starting at 149€. The devices feature deep integration with Perplexity Assistant via a dedicated button, alongside an included 18-month Perplexity Pro subscription. It is a practical move to democratize everyday AI without forcing users into expensive flagship hardware.

Top-tier AI features have mostly been walled inside $1,000+ flagship phones. Deutsche Telekom wants to blow that barrier open.

The European telecom giant just rolled out its new T Phone 3 and T Tablet 2 across ten European markets, pitching them as "AI for everyone." The eye-catching part is the pricing: the phone starts at €149 outright, the tablet at €199, and both drop to just €1 if you sign up for a carrier contract.

Magenta button meets Perplexity

Instead of boasting about raw horsepower, the T Phone 3 doubles down on integrated AI agents. You can summon the built-in Perplexity Assistant simply by double-clicking the power key or tapping a magenta shortcut right on the lockscreen.

The assistant supports voice and text prompts, reads screen content, and analyzes objects through the camera. It can answer everyday questions, scan drooping plants, or pull up recipes from fridge leftovers. It also hooks directly into pre-installed tools to create calendar entries, draft emails, fire off messages, and launch turn-by-turn navigation.

On the software side, the bundle is almost absurdly generous. Buyers get an 18-month subscription to Perplexity Pro for free, while the assistant stays permanently on the device. The camera also integrates Picsart's generative editing tools, backed by a 3-month Picsart Pro tier.

The companion T Tablet 2 features a TCL NXTPAPER display with three dedicated viewing modes for reading and note-taking, wrapped in a chassis made of 75% recycled plastic. A higher-end Pro phone model is scheduled to arrive later this year.

For customers who don't want a new handset, Deutsche Telekom is also sticking a "Magenta AI" button directly inside its MeinMagenta self-care app to dish out free Perplexity search access.

Why it matters

We think Deutsche Telekom is pulling off a brilliant distribution play by turning generative AI into an entry-level telecom commodity.

While Apple, Samsung, and Google use AI as an excuse to nudge consumers toward high-margin flagships, the reality is that most useful everyday AI queries live in the cloud. Bundling an 18-month Perplexity Pro pass with a €149 handset means the software perks alone essentially offset the hardware bill. For budget-conscious users, students, or seniors, it removes every financial barrier to playing with frontier search agents.

The trade-off, however, lies in cloud dependency. Unlike premium phones pushing local SLMs, this device leans heavily on network connectivity. If the connection drops, your shiny AI helper stalls. How many users stick around and pay for Perplexity Pro once the 18-month trial runs dry will also be the real test for this partnership.
