DeepMind shuts Canada office in cost-cutting push

Published Reach 38

Google parent Alphabet is closing DeepMind's Edmonton research hub and cutting operational staff in the UK amid broader restructuring. Impacted researchers and engineers can relocate to other offices, but back-office roles face layoffs, marking the closure of DeepMind's only office not hosted inside a Google workspace.

Even the most prestigious artificial intelligence labs are not immune to tech belt-tightening.

Following Google's massive announcement to cut 12,000 jobs, DeepMind is officially shuttering its research office in Edmonton, Canada, alongside letting go of operational staff in the UK.

Pulling back into Google's footprint

The Edmonton branch held a unique status inside the organization.

According to an internal memo, Edmonton was the only DeepMind research hub that operated entirely outside of a Google-managed facility.

DeepMind confirmed the shutdown in a statement, noting that while Edmonton is closing, its Canadian hubs in Montreal and Toronto will remain open.

The difference is purely practical: Montreal and Toronto already sit inside existing Google offices, avoiding the extra overhead of a standalone facility.

Researchers can relocate, back office gets cut

The cuts draw a sharp line between frontline talent and operational support.

Affected engineers and researchers will have the choice to relocate to other company offices.

However, staff in organizational, infrastructure, and administrative roles will be laid off.

Across the Atlantic, a memo outlined that UK employees in back-office operational roles will also be made redundant as part of the broader cost-cutting initiative.

Sundar Pichai recently cited slowing company growth as the core reason behind Alphabet's cuts, leaving many employees rattled even after months of industry-wide layoff rumors.

Why it matters

For tech workers and researchers, this proves that even frontier AI teams are under the microscope when parent companies tighten purse strings.

Core research talent might still get a safety net and relocation offers, but support infrastructure is quickly trimmed away.

Alphabet’s move shows a clear push to integrate DeepMind deeper into Google's corporate footprint, ending the days of standalone, academic-style satellite outposts.

While consolidating into Google offices saves obvious real estate and administrative overhead, it carries a real hidden cost: forcing researchers to uproot their lives often leads to top talent walking out the door.

At a moment when rivals are fiercely poaching top AI minds, cutting a regional lab to pinch pennies looks like a risky gamble.
