ElevenLabs adds Deepak Chopra's voice for mindful reading
ElevenLabs just partnered with wellness author Deepak Chopra to bring his synthetic voice to its celebrity reading roster. Users can now stream books and articles in his soothing tone. The voice is strictly licensed for reading existing text, meaning users cannot repurpose it to generate custom content.

Imagine winding down for bed and having Deepak Chopra read your saved articles back to you in his signature soothing cadence.
AI audio startup ElevenLabs just officially added Chopra’s iconic voice to its Reader app roster. Users can now choose his synthetic voice to stream books, articles, and long-form texts on demand.
This isn't Chopra's first run-in with ElevenLabs. Back in June, they launched a conversational bot called "Digital Deepak," which was trained on more than 90 of his books and hours of speaking engagements to answer wellness questions in his own voice.
Streaming only, no creative tinkering allowed
Hollywood has spent the last year pushing back hard against AI voice cloning, and ElevenLabs is taking extra steps to show it can play by the rules.
The company emphasized that Chopra’s voice—along with its catalog of licensed late stars like Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds, and Laurence Olivier—can only be used within the Reader app to narrate text. Users cannot use the voice to generate custom voiceovers, marketing clips, or new synthetic audio files.
The move comes right after California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two union-backed AI bills on September 17 requiring explicit consent before tech companies can create digital replicas of performers. ElevenLabs head of partnerships Dustin Blank openly praised the laws, noting that guardrails against unauthorized clones are necessary for legitimate commercial business to survive.
Actor and neuroscientist Mayim Bialik also gave the partnership her stamp of approval, calling it a safe and responsible way to deliver Chopra's teachings to a global audience.
Interestingly, the announcement landed on the exact same day OpenAI rolled out new voices and features for its flagship Advanced Voice Mode.
Why it matters
If you are a fan of guided mindfulness, long-form essays, or calming audiobooks, this is an instant upgrade to the daily listening experience. Chopra’s voice is practically engineered for low-stress reading sessions. The catch is straightforward: you cannot hijack the voice for personal content creation or video editing.
For the broader AI ecosystem, ElevenLabs is signaling how voice platforms will survive in a post-strike, post-legislation world. The wild-west era of scraping celebrity audio without permission is quickly fading. By restricting high-profile voices to a controlled, read-only streaming sandbox and paying estates proper royalties, ElevenLabs is creating a clean playbook for commercializing famous voices.
We think this trade-off is a smart move. Giving up sandbox-wide generation limits viral chaos, but it secures legitimate intellectual property that competitors tied up in legal fights cannot touch. As consent laws tighten in entertainment capitals, this walled-garden licensing model might be the only viable future for celebrity AI voices.
