Cursor drops $200 Ultra plan for coding power users

Published Reach 41

Cursor just launched a new $200/month Ultra plan packing 20x more usage than Pro, tailored for heavy coders who want predictable bills instead of pay-as-you-go spikes. The company is also upgrading Pro by shifting from request caps to compute limits, unlocking unlimited tool calls and unlimited access to its Auto model.

If you write code with AI all day, you already know the worst feeling: running out of fast requests mid-flow or sweating over unpredictable pay-as-you-go bills.

Cursor is tackling that head-on with Ultra, a brand-new $200 per month tier that packs 20 times the usage of its Pro plan.

Predictable pricing for power users

Cursor says Ultra was built specifically for power users who demanded predictable monthly costs rather than fluctuating usage-based bills. Making that volume of compute viable at a flat rate required multi-year partnerships with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI.

At the same time, the standard Pro plan is getting a major upgrade this week.

Instead of counting raw requests, Pro now defaults to compute limits, granting every subscriber at least $20 worth of API-equivalent model inference each month. Cursor is also eliminating all caps on tool calls and opening up unlimited access to its Auto model. If you prefer the old system, you can still opt to stick with the classic 500-request cap.

Why it matters

We think this is a clear sign that AI coding assistants are shifting from lightweight developer toys into serious, high-ticket professional infrastructure.

For casual coders, $200 a month makes zero sense. But for solo founders and engineers who live in their editor all day, paying a flat fee is far more appealing than watching usage meters tick up unpredictably.

By leveraging multi-year deals with major frontier lab partners, Cursor is essentially turning bulk compute into a predictable developer subscription. The risk, of course, is margin pressure if power users push that 20x compute allowance to its absolute limit, but it cements Cursor as the tool to beat for power users right now.
