Clearcam turns standard security cameras into AI scouts

Published Reach 54

Clearcam just made upgrading home security painless by turning regular RTSP camera feeds into AI-powered smart systems. Powered by Qwen3-VL, it brings real-time object tracking, incident summaries, and natural language footage search to Mac and Linux. Basically, you get advanced surveillance intelligence without replacing a single piece of hardware.

Clearcam is a local NVR and AI system designed to turn standard security cameras into smart surveillance gear without buying new hardware. As long as your cameras output a compatible RTSP stream, you can plug them in to get object tracking, automated summaries, and natural language footage search.

What it can do

On the detection side, it tracks people and vehicles across your feeds. Instead of relying on crude motion alerts, it uses the Qwen3-VL vision-language model to understand the scene and generate incident summaries. That means you can find specific events by typing plain language queries instead of scrubbing through hours of timelines.

Clearcam is built on Python, combining video ingestion, object tracking, and vision model inference into a unified stack. It runs locally on Mac and Linux, managed entirely via a web browser. For smart home setups, notifications can be routed through Home Assistant, Pushover, or n8n. There is also an iOS companion app for checking live feeds and clips, though certain remote features are gated behind a paid Premium tier.

Why it matters

This is a compelling project for anyone with existing RTSP cameras who wants multimodal AI capabilities without locking into proprietary cloud ecosystems. Running the core pipeline locally also keeps sensitive video feeds strictly private.

However, processing video with a model like Qwen3-VL locally means you will need adequate hardware to keep things smooth. Users looking for a 100% free setup should also note that some mobile companion features require a paid subscription.
