Claude clears federal hurdle with FedRAMP High on Google Cloud
Anthropic just secured FedRAMP High and DoD Impact Level 2 authorizations for Claude models hosted on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. This clears the way for federal agencies and defense contractors to deploy Claude 3.7 Sonnet across healthcare, finance, and emergency operations while strictly handling sensitive unclassified data. Anthropic noted this also builds the foundation for higher-security IL5 workloads.

For government agencies and defense teams, the biggest barrier to adopting frontier AI has never been the budget. It has always been the compliance paperwork.
Anthropic just announced that its Claude models on Google Cloud's Vertex AI are now officially authorized for FedRAMP High and Department of Defense Impact Level 2 workloads.
Clearing the security hurdle
FedRAMP provides the federal government with a strict, standardized security framework for cloud software. The High baseline covers sensitive, unclassified data where a security breach could cause severe damage.
With this green light, federal civilian departments running healthcare, law enforcement, finance, and emergency operations can finally plug Claude directly into their production pipelines.
On the defense side, the IL2 authorization allows military agencies and defense contractors to put Claude to work on non-controlled unclassified missions.
The authorization covers the entire model lineup, including Anthropic's flagship Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Government teams do not have to manage servers or worry about hardware provisioning either, because everything runs as a fully managed, serverless API through Google Cloud's Assured Workloads.
Anthropic also confirmed this milestone lays the groundwork for eventual IL5 support, which would unlock far more sensitive Pentagon workloads down the road.
Why it matters
Frontier AI is entering its enterprise trench-warfare phase, where compliance clearances matter just as much as benchmark scores.
For government employees and regulated contractors, this is a massive operational win. Instead of being stuck with older legacy models or waiting months for one-off exemptions, teams can now legitimately deploy Claude 3.7 Sonnet for high-stakes analysis, document processing, and internal workflows inside their existing Google Cloud setups.
Anthropic is also playing the distribution game very smartly here. Navigating the federal bureaucracy alone is brutal for an AI startup, but piggybacking on Google Cloud's established compliance infrastructure lets Anthropic tap into lucrative public-sector budgets with minimal friction.
This directly turns up the heat on Microsoft and OpenAI. Microsoft Azure has historically dominated government cloud procurement, but with Claude landing inside FedRAMP High environments, the race for federal AI spending just became a serious two-horse contest.
