Claude can now use tools
Anthropic just made tool use generally available across the entire Claude 3 model family via its API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud's Vertex AI. Developers can now connect Claude to external APIs to extract structured data, automate multi-step workflows, and stream tool interactions. Why it matters: It gives Claude the hands and feet needed to act as a true agent, though parallel tool calls aren't supported yet.
Giving an AI model access to external APIs used to feel like playing roulette with JSON outputs. You never quite knew if it would break your downstream code.
Anthropic just rolled out tool use to general availability across its entire Claude 3 lineup, including Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. It is live now on the Anthropic Messages API, Amazon Bedrock, and Google Cloud's Vertex AI.
The developer toolkit gets an overhaul
The update turns Claude into an active operator rather than a passive text generator. It can pull structured data from invoices, trigger software workflows like canceling a subscription, or search external databases for live information.
Anthropic also added several practical developer upgrades. Tool use now supports streaming to eliminate awkward response pauses, which is crucial for live voice and customer support bots.
Developers can also force Claude to call a specific tool rather than guessing what it might do. Even better, tool use works with image inputs, and Opus now spits out reasoning inside thinking tags so engineers can debug logic in real time.
One noticeable catch remains: Claude 3 models cannot handle parallel tool calls yet. If your workflow needs multiple simultaneous actions, it has to execute them sequentially.
Early adopters are already sharing numbers. Learning platform StudyFetch hooked tool use into its AI tutor and saw a 42% spike in positive user feedback. Enterprise platforms Intuned and Hebbia are leaning heavily on the lightweight Claude 3 Haiku to run cost-effective document scraping and multi-step workflows.
Why it matters
We think this release finally turns Claude 3 from a brilliant conversationalist into a reliable, enterprise-grade workhorse.
For builders, the real winner here is Claude 3 Haiku. Haiku is blazing fast and cheap, and pairing it with strict API execution makes it an instant favorite for repetitive data extraction and routing jobs that used to require pricier models.
Across the industry, this levels the playing field with OpenAI's function calling ecosystem. Launching directly on AWS Bedrock and Google Cloud gives Anthropic massive enterprise distribution from day one.
Exposing the model's inner thoughts through thinking tags is a brilliant move that will save developers hours of debugging. However, the lack of parallel tool calls is a real bottleneck. If your agent requires orchestrating multiple APIs at once, Claude might feel slower compared to alternatives until Anthropic fixes that gap.
