ChatGPT can now virtually try on clothes for you

Published Reach 41

OpenAI just rolled out a global virtual try-on feature and a product favorites tool inside ChatGPT. Powered by its new ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, users can click a "Try On" button on shopping listings and upload a selfie to see how outfits look. Why it matters: OpenAI is pushing deeper into fashion discovery, taking direct aim at Google and Pinterest.

Online shopping has always involved a guessing game of how clothes will actually look on you. OpenAI wants to end that guesswork.

On Thursday, OpenAI announced the global launch of two new shopping features for ChatGPT: a virtual try-on tool for apparel and accessories, and a new Favorites library to save items for later.

The update turns the AI chatbot into a personal dressing room, pushing OpenAI further into everyday consumer commerce.

Virtual dressing powered by new imaging tech

Here is how it works: whenever you get shopping results inside ChatGPT, you will see a new Try On button. Upload a selfie or a full-body picture, and ChatGPT will show you how that jacket or dress looks on your frame.

You do not have to rely only on in-chat search either. You can grab a screenshot of an item from any retail website, upload it, and ask ChatGPT to put it on your photo.

Behind the scenes, the feature runs on OpenAI’s newly rolled-out ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. The company claims it handles natural lighting and fabric textures much better, follows complex visual editing prompts more reliably, and generates results with lower latency.

You can also describe a particular aesthetic to get a fully curated outfit, or upload celebrity photos to let ChatGPT track down purchasable matching pieces. Any discovered items and their generated try-on previews can be saved directly into a dedicated Library in the app.

Why it matters

For shoppers, having an instant visual gut-check before buying clothes is genuinely useful, especially when you can just drop in any web screenshot. However, generated pixels are not fabric. An AI image cannot tell you if the shoulders are cut too tight or how the material stretches in real life, so you still have to take the preview with a grain of salt.

Strategically, this is a much smarter e-commerce play for OpenAI. The company previously had to scrap an instant checkout experiment that underperformed, while other startups like Instinct recently faced backlash when proactive product pitches felt like intrusive ads. A visual try-on tool acts as a helpful utility rather than a pushy salesperson.

Still, OpenAI is stepping directly into a fierce arena. Finding outfits and buying celebrity looks is core territory for Pinterest and Google, and Google actually rolled out its own virtual try-on tech last year. ChatGPT is great at generating images, but convincing millions of shoppers to use it as their primary shopping hub will be an uphill battle.
