ChatGPT lets you send emails right from writing blocks

Published Reach 51

OpenAI just rolled out an update allowing web users to send emails directly from ChatGPT's writing blocks. Instead of copying and pasting drafts into your email client, you can now draft, tweak, and fire them off without leaving the conversation. It turns ChatGPT into a much tighter hub for daily communication.

Drafting an email in ChatGPT usually ends with the same tedious ritual: copy the text, open Gmail or Outlook, paste it in, fix formatting, and hit send.

OpenAI is officially cutting out that middle step.

According to an announcement from the official ChatGPT account on X, users on the web interface can now send emails directly from within writing blocks, keeping the entire drafting, refining, and dispatching process inside a single chat window.

Writing blocks become a lightweight editor

Writing blocks were first rolled out late last year as a formatting update.

Instead of dumping drafted paragraphs into the standard chat feed, ChatGPT places email drafts into an isolated canvas that looks and acts like an email composer.

Users can highlight a single sentence to ask for revisions, review and approve suggestions one by one, or simply edit text manually inside the block. With the latest update, you can hit the send button right there without jumping tabs or opening external software.

Privacy flags and spreadsheet push

Before handing over your daily inbox chores, there is an important privacy concern to keep on your radar.

A recent lawsuit filed in California claims OpenAI shared user prompts, chat logs, and identifying information with Google and Meta tracking tools without proper consent. The complaint alleges that this practice violated both California privacy laws and federal wiretap rules. If you are handling sensitive commercial data or confidential outreach, caution is warranted.

At the same time, OpenAI is aggressively expanding its workplace capabilities. ChatGPT is improving its long-term memory by learning from user chat history over time to personalize answers. On top of that, ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets has officially graduated from beta and launched globally, allowing users to build workbooks, clean up messy datasets, and generate formulas using plain language.

Why it matters

We think this small button is a major indicator of where OpenAI wants to take ChatGPT: transforming it from a text generator into an active workflow operating system.

For everyday users who spend hours handling boilerplate outreach, vendor inquiries, or follow-ups, skipping the copy-paste loop is an immediate quality-of-life win. But given the recent California wiretap allegations regarding tracking pixels, it is hard to recommend routing sensitive business communications through this setup just yet.

For the broader productivity market, this puts direct pressure on incumbent platforms. If people stop switching to native Gmail or Outlook interfaces to send their mail, the value of those frontends shrinks dramatically. This move will almost certainly force Google and Microsoft to push Gemini and Copilot deeper into their respective messaging tools to prevent ChatGPT from capturing the user interface.

OpenAI was smart to repurpose its existing writing blocks rather than building a heavy email client from scratch. Still, the moment an AI interface starts executing real-world actions like sending communications, data privacy and consent standards become significantly less forgiving.
