ChatGPT is leaving WhatsApp
OpenAI is shutting down ChatGPT on WhatsApp on January 15, 2026, citing platform policy changes. Users who message 1-800-ChatGPT need to link their accounts through its profile link before that deadline to transfer conversation history to official ChatGPT apps, as chats won't export automatically.

Chatting with AI inside your favorite messaging app felt like magic while it lasted, but hosting your product on a rival's turf always comes with a timer.
OpenAI just announced that ChatGPT will shut down on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. The move follows an unexpected policy and terms change from WhatsApp, pulling the plug on a bot that drew over 50 million users.
Moving 50 million users off the platform
For anyone chatting with the bot on WhatsApp, the biggest catch is preserving your history. OpenAI noted that WhatsApp does not support chat exports, so past conversations will not transfer automatically after the January deadline.
To save your chats, you have to download the official ChatGPT app on Android, iOS, or desktop, create an account, and open the profile for 1-800-ChatGPT in WhatsApp. Clicking the link there connects your phone number to your OpenAI account and imports your chat logs into the main service.
OpenAI is sweetening the forced move by pointing out what users were missing inside WhatsApp. The standalone apps, including the ChatGPT Atlas client on macOS, offer full voice conversations, deep research, and direct file uploads.
The WhatsApp bot will remain active with periodic migration reminders until the January 15 cutoff.
Why it matters
If you are one of the 50 million people using ChatGPT inside WhatsApp, you need to link your account right now. WhatsApp's lack of export tools means any unlinked conversation will vanish permanently once the calendar turns. Moving to native apps feels like a chore, but it genuinely unlocks a much better toolset like live voice and document handling.
Industry-wide, this looks like a classic platform wall going up. WhatsApp parent company Meta has been aggressively pushing Meta AI across its entire messaging ecosystem, and leaving a direct rival with prime real estate in front of tens of millions of users made zero strategic sense.
We think this transition marks the end of free-ride distribution for third-party AI assistants. While losing WhatsApp cuts off a frictionless onboarding funnel, OpenAI is smartly using the eviction notice to convert casual texters into registered account holders on its own platform.
