OpenAI adds chat archiving to ChatGPT
OpenAI just rolled out a chat archive feature for ChatGPT. Users can now tidy up their sidebar without permanently deleting chats, and view archived conversations anytime in Settings. It's currently live on web and iOS, with Android rolling out soon.

If your ChatGPT sidebar looks like an endless digital graveyard of half-baked ideas and one-off queries, OpenAI finally threw you a lifeline.
The company announced on X that it is rolling out a new chat archive feature. It is currently live for Web and iOS users, with an Android release coming shortly.
Clean up the sidebar without hitting delete
We all have those threads we do not necessarily need to look at every day, but delete feels way too permanent. Messaging apps like WhatsApp and Instagram solved this ages ago, and now ChatGPT is catching up.
To tuck a thread away, just click the three dots next to any chat in your history list and hit Archive.
The conversation vanishes from your main sidebar instantly, giving you a clutter-free view. When you need that old prompt back, you can find the complete log tucked safely inside Settings.
This follows another recent quality-of-life update from OpenAI: voice chat, previously locked behind the paid tier, is now completely free for all mobile app users. You just tap the headphone icon by the text box to choose a voice and start talking.
Why it matters
Power users have been begging for basic organization tools for months. If you use ChatGPT for work, creative writing, and troubleshooting code, the sidebar becomes completely unusable within a few weeks. Archiving brings instant sanity to that workspace without risking lost context.
It also marks a shift in how OpenAI approaches its interface. For a long time, the focus was almost entirely on underlying model power, leaving UX shockingly bare-bones. We think simple additions like archiving show that OpenAI is finally treating ChatGPT like a daily productivity workspace rather than a raw research playground.
That said, it is still playing catch-up to competitors and third-party extensions that offer full folder hierarchies, tags, and workspace sorting. Archiving is great for decluttering, but without proper folders, your archive tab might quickly become the next chaotic drawer you dread opening.
