Gemini narrows the gap as ChatGPT growth stalls

Published Reach 42

Google's Gemini is catching up to ChatGPT faster than expected. Fresh Sensor Tower data shows ChatGPT’s global monthly active users grew just 6% from August to November, hinting at saturation around 810 million users. Meanwhile, Gemini surged 30% over the same period, boosted by its Nano Banana image model and native Android integration.

The unshakeable king of consumer AI is starting to feel the heat.

According to new data from Sensor Tower, ChatGPT's explosive growth is finally beginning to cool off. While OpenAI's chatbot still commands 50% of all mobile downloads and 55% of global monthly active users, its momentum has visibly slowed.

Between August and November 2025, ChatGPT's global monthly active users grew by only about 6%, landing at roughly 810 million. Sensor Tower suggests the app might be inching toward market saturation. Even worse for OpenAI, ChatGPT's share of global monthly active users among top rivals slipped three percentage points over those four months.

Gemini’s double punch: OS integration and Nano Banana

While ChatGPT tapped the brakes, Google's Gemini hit the gas.

Over that same August-to-November stretch, Gemini’s monthly active users surged roughly 30%. From May to November, Gemini expanded its market share by three percentage points across the top AI chat apps.

A huge chunk of that boost came from its viral image generation model, Nano Banana, released in September. Gemini app users were spending an average of 11 minutes per day in the app by November, up a massive 120% from March. Meanwhile, daily time spent on ChatGPT barely budged, climbing just 6% over that period and actually dropping 10% between July and November.

Google also has an unfair hardware advantage. In the U.S., about twice as many Android users interact with Gemini directly through the mobile operating system rather than opening the standalone Gemini app. That OS-level convenience is something OpenAI simply cannot replicate.

Smaller rivals are taking bites out of the pie too. Perplexity’s monthly active users skyrocketed 370% year-over-year, while Claude surged 190%. With ChatGPT's downloads growing 85% year-over-year, it actually lagged behind the overall cohort’s 110% average growth.

All of this explains why OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently fired off a "code red" memo to staff, ordering an all-out focus on personalization, reliability, and image generation.

Why it matters

We think this shift marks the official end of the easy land-grab phase in consumer AI.

For everyday users, intense competition is the best possible news. Google proved that a single standout creative tool like Nano Banana can lure millions away, forcing OpenAI to scramble. You can expect both companies to ship faster updates to personalization and creative generation over the next few months to keep your attention.

For the industry, Google’s surge showcases the terrifying power of platform distribution. Having Gemini baked directly into Android bypasses the app store friction entirely. Pure-play software AI startups simply don't possess that kind of built-in real estate.

That said, it looks premature to crown a new champion. ChatGPT still controls a massive base of 810 million monthly users. Google's recent sprint was largely driven by one hit feature, and if OpenAI delivers a knockout blow with its next product release, the narrative could pivot right back.
