ChatGPT desktop fixes its sidebar and syncs your work
OpenAI just updated the ChatGPT desktop app after hearing early user feedback. The sidebar now displays your conversation history and projects, while Chat and Work modes sync smoothly across web, mobile, and desktop clients. You can also switch modes directly in the app, though local tasks still stay safely on your machine.

OpenAI just shipped a much-needed cleanup patch for its ChatGPT desktop app, openly admitting it did not get things quite right the first time around. After a wave of user complaints over the redesign, the team moved fast to restore the basics.
Bringing back the sidebar and cross-device sync
Sidebar navigation is back. You can now see your full conversation history and projects directly in the desktop sidebar instead of feeling lost in a stripped-down window.
Even better, your Chat and Work histories now seamlessly sync across web, mobile, and desktop. Local tasks still remain strictly on your machine. You can also toggle between Chat and Work modes directly inside the desktop app, matching the exact flow already found on mobile and web. Meanwhile, power users relying on Codex mode will see no changes there.
Why it matters
We think OpenAI deserves credit for listening and moving quickly, but the initial stumble showed how easy it is to break daily workflows by oversimplifying desktop software. People use native desktop apps precisely for fast context-switching and heavy lifting, not stripped-down wrappers.
Unifying the Chat and Work toggle across every screen signals that OpenAI wants a clean division between casual prompting and actual workplace tasks. If you uninstalled the desktop app in frustration last week, it is now actually worth keeping in your dock, especially with local tasks safely walled off on your drive.
