The generative AI boom in 7 charts
CB Insights just mapped out the generative AI landscape, revealing that startups raised over $2.6B across 110 deals in 2022. Despite massive hype around ChatGPT, more than 80% of identified companies are still at Series A or earlier, showing the market is just getting started.

ChatGPT racked up one million users in less than a week after launching in late 2022, kicking off an unprecedented frenzy around generative AI. But beneath the consumer hype, where is venture capital actually flowing?
A research breakdown from CB Insights mapped over 250 startups across the generative AI ecosystem. The verdict: 2022 was a banner year, hauling in over $2.6B in equity funding across 110 deals.
Big checks for the frontrunners
The bulk of that capital pooled around a tiny handful of foundational players.
Anthropic led the pack with a massive $580M Series B round, followed by Inflection AI's $225M Series A. Developer-focused NLP platform Cohere raised a $125M Series B, while marketing content platform Jasper secured a $125M Series A.
So far, the generative AI sector has minted six unicorns valued at $1B or more. Both Jasper and Stability AI crossed into the billion-dollar club in Q4 2022 following $100M+ mega-rounds.
Meanwhile, OpenAI, fresh off a multi-billion-dollar deal from Microsoft, is rumored to carry a $29B valuation, up from its $20B valuation during a 2022 secondary share sale.
Text pulls the cash, visuals win on volume
Despite mega-valuations at the top, the broader market is surprisingly green.
Among the 250+ generative AI startups tracked, 33% have not raised any outside equity funding at all. Another 51% are still at Series A or earlier stages, meaning over 80% of the entire landscape is still embryonic.
When it comes to categories, text generation leads in total dollars. Since 2021, startups tackling summarization, storytelling, and automated copy have collected $852M across 87 deals.
Visual media generation claimed the crown for deal frequency. Startups creating everything from still imagery to lip-synced video and enterprise avatars have closed 144 deals totaling $822M since 2021.
Why it matters
This landscape paints a very clear picture of a two-speed market.
At the top, foundation model developers and early breakout tools are sucking up nine-figure checks and commanding sky-high valuations. But right below them, the vast majority of startups are still bootstrapping or surviving on seed checks.
For builders, this suggests that practical application layers are far from saturated. The gold rush is expanding fast into search engines, motion capture, and specialized enterprise tools.
However, we think the heavy concentration of cash in basic text and image tools points to an upcoming squeeze. As foundation models get cheaper and more capable, lightweight wrappers in marketing copy and image generation look extremely vulnerable unless they embed deeply into enterprise workflows.
