ByteDance and Alibaba gear up for a Spring Festival AI showdown
ByteDance and Alibaba are reportedly prepping next-generation flagship models for release during the February Lunar New Year holiday. ByteDance is lining up Doubao 2.0 alongside major image and video upgrades, while Alibaba is readying Qwen 3.5 with targeted reasoning boosts. With DeepSeek V4 also rumored for mid-February, China's frontier AI race is entering an intense new clash.
Chinese tech giants are gearing up for a massive holiday showdown, and this time the battleground isn't red envelopes or variety show sponsorships. It's flagship AI models.
According to industry reports, ByteDance and Alibaba are both preparing to unleash their next-generation foundation models during February's Lunar New Year. DeepSeek is also quietly moving its pieces, setting the stage for an explosive start to China's 2026 AI race.
ByteDance unleashes a suite, Alibaba sharpens reasoning
ByteDance is reportedly going wide with a three-pronged release as early as next month. The lineup includes its flagship Doubao 2.0 language model, alongside Seeddream 5.0 for image generation and Seeddance 2.0 for video.
The distribution engine behind these models is already massive. Doubao reportedly hit 163 million monthly active users in December 2025, cementing its status as China's most popular consumer AI app. ByteDance has also integrated Doubao directly into Douyin, giving the upcoming models immediate access to hundreds of millions of daily users.
Alibaba is taking a different angle with its upcoming Qwen 3.5 flagship, expected to drop over the holiday break. Instead of leading with media generation, Qwen 3.5 is reportedly laser-focused on complex math, coding, and multi-step reasoning.
Alibaba isn't staying behind the scenes, either. Sources say the company plans an aggressive consumer marketing blitz for the Qwen app over the holiday, directly taking on Doubao for retail mindshare.
The open-source wild card and the catch-up game
Meanwhile, open-source heavyweight DeepSeek appears to be priming its next move. Recent commits to its GitHub repository revealed a new architecture tag dubbed MODEL1, which observers widely see as the backbone for DeepSeek V4. Insiders indicate the model could arrive as early as mid-February.
Startups are also trying to stay relevant. Moonshot AI shipped its Kimi K2.5 earlier this month with solid visual and code capabilities, but startups lack the proprietary cloud infra and built-in distribution enjoyed by the giants.
Then there is Tencent. While it remains behind ByteDance and Alibaba in foundational models, it is ramping up catch-up efforts. Following the hire of former OpenAI scientist Yao Shunyu as chief AI scientist in September, Tencent reshuffled its internal AI teams to accelerate delivery.
Why it matters
For everyday users and developers, February is going to bring a massive leap in accessible tooling. Whether you need free video generation or top-tier open reasoning models, China's leading labs are about to flood the market with capable upgrades that are well worth testing immediately.
Structurally, this marks the end of pure academic benchmarking in China. The competition has evolved into a full-stack warfare combining proprietary silicon, cloud capacity, model architecture, and massive consumer distribution.
ByteDance's playbook is ruthless in its pragmatism. By embedding Doubao into Douyin, it builds an unbeatable user flywheel before rolling out multimodal upgrades. Alibaba's counter-strategy looks equally calculated: maintain the technical high ground among coders with Qwen 3.5 while spending heavily to bridge its consumer gap.
The real test will be retention. Burning capital during the holiday can win downloads, but unless these new models demonstrate meaningful jumps in reasoning depth and practical utility, keeping those users will remain an expensive headache.
