Browser Use rides Manus virality to 5x download surge
Open-source tool Browser Use just blew up after users realized it powers the viral AI agent Manus. Co-creator Gregor Zunic says daily downloads jumped from around 5,000 on March 3 to 28,000 on March 10. By letting models click buttons and fill out forms, it is rapidly becoming the shovel of choice in the web agent gold rush.
Browser Use is an open-source tool that lets AI models interact with websites by clicking buttons, navigating menus, and filling out forms on your behalf. It just exploded in popularity after developers realized it is one of the core engines powering the viral Chinese AI agent Manus.
Following a post on X that racked up over 2.4 million views breaking down how Manus uses the tool, traffic went through the roof. Co-creator Gregor Zunic told TechCrunch that daily downloads of its free self-hosted package surged more than 5x in a week, leaping from roughly 5,000 on March 3 to 28,000 on March 10.
How it works
Teaching an AI model to use the web is notoriously messy. Browser Use cleans that up by parsing DOM elements like buttons, input fields, and widgets into clean formats models can easily grasp.
Once the model decides on the next step, the tool executes real mouse clicks, manages keystrokes, and handles multi-tab browsing. It can also save downloaded files and run database operations based on agent instructions.
Running it locally
Zunic and co-founder Magnus Müller originally spun the project out of ETH Zurich's Student Project House. They built the initial minimum viable product in just four days, posted it to Hacker News, and shot straight to number one.
Today, Browser Use offers a fully free, self-hosted version that you can pull down and run on your own machine alongside your preferred LLM. For teams that do not want to manage headless browsers and scraping infrastructure, they also sell managed cloud plans.
Why it matters
If you are building any flavor of autonomous web workflow, automated data gathering, or personal assistant, this is a must-try. Instead of spending weeks wrestling with Playwright or raw browser automation libraries, Browser Use gives you a ready-made bridge between your model and the live web.
The founders are explicitly playing the shovel-seller strategy in the agent gold rush. By open-sourcing the tricky connection layer, they have quietly turned their library into the default browser backbone for the next wave of autonomous agents.
