Black Forest Labs drops FLUX.2 klein for sub-second image generation

Published Reach 48

Black Forest Labs just launched FLUX.2 klein, delivering sub-second image generation and editing on consumer GPUs with only 13GB of VRAM. It comes in an Apache 2.0-licensed 4B version and an open-weights 9B model, available via API, local runtimes, and a free web demo.

Sub-second speed on everyday hardware

Black Forest Labs just rolled out FLUX.2 klein, bringing ultra-fast image generation and editing down to consumer-grade rigs.

The standout feature is speed: generating an image now takes under a second. Even better, it runs on standard GPUs with just 13GB of VRAM, making it a natural fit for rapid editing, quick style swaps, and brainstorming ideas from scratch.

Black Forest Labs is offering the model via API as well as for local deployment. It comes in two distinct flavors: a 4B version released under the permissive Apache 2.0 license, and a larger 9B open-weights model. A free demo app is also available for anyone wanting to test it right away.

Why it matters

High-end open-weight image models have traditionally been notorious VRAM hogs, forcing creators onto pricey cloud instances or expensive workstation GPUs.

Shrinking the requirement down to 13GB while hitting sub-second generation completely changes the workflow dynamic. We think bringing generation times under one second turns AI imaging from an asynchronous waiting game into an interactive canvas. Backed by an Apache 2.0 license for the 4B variant, this looks poised to become a go-to building block for indie tools and real-time creative pipelines.
