Baidu CEO Robin Li just unveiled Ernie 4.0 at an event in Beijing, boldly claiming the new model is not inferior to OpenAI's GPT-4 in any aspect. The update brings major upgrades to understanding, reasoning, generation, and memory, and will plug directly into Baidu Search and Maps. Markets reacted cautiously, with shares dipping slightly after the demo.

Baidu just threw down the gauntlet in the global AI race.

At the company's annual Baidu World event in Beijing, CEO Robin Li unveiled Ernie 4.0, claiming the new flagship foundation model is not inferior in any aspect to OpenAI's GPT-4.

On-stage demos and a full product makeover

To back up the bold claim, Li showcased what Baidu calls the four pillars of intelligence: understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory.

During live demos, Ernie 4.0 generated a multimodal car commercial in minutes from a single prompt, solved complex geometry problems, and iteratively refined a short story plot as new constraints were added on the fly. The bot can also parse disorganized human prompts and pick up on hidden nuances, Li noted.

Dr. Haifeng Wang, Baidu's CTO, added that the model has improved by roughly 30 percent since beta testing kicked off in September.

Beyond raw intelligence, Baidu is executing the Microsoft playbook: integrating Ernie 4.0 across its entire software ecosystem.

Baidu Search is getting a Google SGE-style revamp, replacing traditional links with synthesized answers, images, and dynamic charts. Baidu Wenku and Drive gain document synthesis and automated slideshow creation, while Baidu Maps now handles multi-step natural language commands for hotel bookings and ride hailing. Enterprise clients get Baidu GBI, a secure business intelligence suite tailored to private data silos.

Yet, Wall Street was not immediately convinced. Baidu shares dipped 1.32 percent on the morning of the presentation, with Reuters reporting that analysts were hoping for a larger technological leap over Ernie 3.5.

Why it matters

Claiming feature parity with GPT-4 is a massive psychological milestone, especially as U.S. chip export bans tighten access to cutting-edge compute.

For everyday users and Chinese enterprises, this deep ecosystem integration brings real utility. Getting GPT-4-grade multimodal creation and business analytics directly inside standard search, cloud storage, and office suites eliminates workflow friction without needing complex API setups.

We think Baidu is making the right strategic move by prioritizing application-level deployment over pure model bragging rights. However, the market's muted reaction shows that flashy staged demos no longer dazzle investors. Until independent benchmarks and enterprise developers put Ernie 4.0 through rigorous real-world torture tests, skepticism will remain high over whether it truly matches OpenAI's crown jewel under the hood.
