Baidu plans March launch for its own ChatGPT rival
Baidu is reportedly preparing to roll out a ChatGPT-style conversational AI service this March. The chatbot will run on its homegrown Ernie model and will eventually be embedded directly into Baidu's core search engine.

ChatGPT set the tech world on fire, and now China's biggest search engine is stepping into the ring.
Baidu is planning to launch a ChatGPT-style conversational AI bot this March, according to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg. The tool is set to make its debut right inside Baidu's core search engine.
Instead of just returning blue links, the feature will generate human-like answers directly to user queries.
Conversational search incoming
Baidu plans to roll out the service as a standalone application style feature that gets woven directly into its primary search bar.
Like ChatGPT, it will handle complex natural language questions and generate human-sounding prose, code, and summaries.
During an internal meeting seen by Bloomberg, Baidu CEO Robin Li acknowledged the sea change.
He told employees that conversational AI represents a new future that is shifting the business landscape, adding that he was thrilled the tech they think about every day is finally getting this level of attention.
The pressure on legacy search is mounting worldwide. Microsoft is exploring a massive multi-billion dollar expansion with OpenAI to integrate the tech into Bing, and media outlets like BuzzFeed saw their shares spike 150% just by saying they would use AI for content.
Powered by Ernie
While Chinese users have flooded social media with screenshots of ChatGPT, accessing the tool inside mainland China remains difficult and blocked.
That leaves an enormous vacuum, and Baidu wants to fill it using Ernie, its proprietary large language model developed over several years.
According to Baidu research papers, Ernie has been trained on both Chinese and English sources, pulling from Wikipedia, Reddit, and BookCorpus alongside Baidu's own internal data goldmines like Baidu Baike and Baidu News.
Given local internet regulations, the tool will also be tightly calibrated to comply with domestic content censorship rules.
Why it matters
For everyday users in China, this is likely their first chance to use a native, frictionless conversational AI without jumping through network hoops. If Baidu pulls it off, millions of students, programmers, and professionals will have a ChatGPT equivalent built straight into the search page they already use every day.
For the tech industry, Baidu firing the first shot will force other Chinese tech giants to pull their experimental models out of research labs and ship consumer-facing products immediately.
We think launching this inside search is both Baidu's biggest advantage and its biggest trap.
It is smart because Baidu already owns the distribution and vast proprietary Chinese-language text from Baike. But chatbots are notorious for hallucinating facts, which directly clashes with search engine credibility.
Balancing factual accuracy, strict local compliance, and high server costs makes March a massive high-stakes test for Robin Li's team.
