Asana preps its work graph for an AI upgrade

Published Reach 31

Asana just launched a new suite of work intelligence dashboards, giving managers instant visibility into budgets, team capacity, and pre-built workflow bundles. While none of these tools include AI just yet, the company designed this new data foundation to roll out AI-generated portfolios in its next iteration.

Running a large team often feels like driving with a foggy windshield. You know people are busy, but tracking who is working on what, which projects are burning through budget, and whether goals are actually being met usually requires manually pulling numbers across a dozen spreadsheets.

Asana rolled out a new suite of work intelligence dashboards designed to put that cross-company visibility directly in front of managers.

Alex Hood, Asana's chief product officer, says the goal is executive reporting that can live at any altitude of the company. Whether you are leading an entire division or running a single squad, you can pick the projects and portfolios you care about and instantly pull strategic initiatives, team capacity, and budgets into a single view.

Spotting burnout before it happens

The update centers on three main features, starting with what Asana calls resource intelligence.

The system maps out workloads for specific skills across the entire organization in a clear graphical format. Managers can immediately see who is swamped and on the verge of burning out, versus who has spare bandwidth to take on more.

Crucially, Hood noted that teams can load-balance work across groups that do not even share a direct reporting line or traditional hierarchy.

Asana is also launching workflow bundles under its execution intelligence umbrella. Instead of building every internal pipeline from scratch, teams get pre-built templates based on industry best practices that they can pull off the shelf and plug their tasks straight into.

No AI just yet, but the foundation is set

Here is the candid twist: none of these new features actually have AI running inside them today.

While almost every enterprise tool is rushing to slap an AI badge on release notes, Hood was upfront that these tools are not AI-driven yet. Instead, he described them as the foundation that points toward the exact problems Asana wants to solve with AI next.

The upcoming iteration will aim to use AI to automatically generate personalized portfolios and surfaced insights on the fly, building directly on top of the work graph that powers these dashboards.

Why it matters

We think Asana took a refreshingly sensible route here. Instead of slapping a hallucination-prone chatbot into project boards just to join the hype cycle, they fixed the plumbing first. For managers drowning in status meetings, getting real capacity tracking and consolidated budgets right now is genuinely useful software, AI or not.

The real test will be speed. With Microsoft, Notion, and every other collaboration tool rapidly weaponizing generative AI, Asana cannot afford to linger on roadmaps for long.

There is also the cultural question inside teams. Seeing everyone's exact workload mapped across the company sounds great for balance, but it walks a thin line between helpful load-balancing and micromanagement anxiety. How managers wield that visibility will determine whether this feels like support or surveillance.
