Artifact just partnered with Speechify to roll out an AI text-to-speech feature that reads news articles aloud. It offers over 30 English voices—including celebrity options like Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow—along with up to 4.5x playback speeds and background listening. The update is live now on iOS and coming soon to Android.

What if you could catch up on your daily news articles while driving or cooking, with Snoop Dogg or Gwyneth Paltrow casually reading them into your ears?

Artifact, the personalized news app built by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, just rolled out a new AI-powered text-to-speech feature that turns any article into an audio briefing.

The newsroom gets a celebrity makeover

The feature comes through a partnership with Speechify. According to Artifact product lead Robby Stein, the integration brings more than 30 distinct English AI voices directly into the app.

Among the lineup are familiar celebrity voices, including rapper Snoop Dogg and actress Gwyneth Paltrow. If you are curious about what they sound like before downloading, Speechify already previews their synthetic clones on its site.

Using it is straightforward. When opening an article on Artifact, tapping the play button on the bottom bar launches the player. It supports background playback, letting the audio roll even if you navigate elsewhere in the app or lock your phone.

For power listeners who hate wasting time, playback speed can crank all the way up to an absurd 4.5x. The feature is live on iOS today, with an Android rollout coming soon.

According to early hands-on testing by The Verge, the voices still carry a slight synthetic sheen that reveals their AI origins. But as an everyday utility for absorbing dense articles, they get the job done without friction.

Why it matters

We think Artifact is executing one of the cleanest AI product playbooks in news right now.

Since its launch in January, the app has systematically tackled consumer pain points using AI. It already lets users summarize long stories and rewrite obnoxious clickbait headlines. Adding ambient audio fills out the reading loop, turning a text feed into a flexible on-the-go media hub.

For users, this lowers the bar for consuming long-form content during busy commutes. While the celebrity voices are clearly marketing hooks designed to drive app installs, practical touches like background playback and high-speed controls cater directly to information junkies.

Strategically, partnering with Speechify instead of building a speech model in-house is smart. It allows a nimble startup team to deliver top-tier voice tech without heavy computing overhead.

The real test will be retention once the novelty of Snoop reading the news wears off. Artifact will need rock-solid pronunciation on complex topics and expanded language support to make audio a permanent habit for users.
