Apple's Scary Fast event unleashes M3 chips and refreshed Macs
Apple just hosted its late-night "Scary Fast" showcase to reveal its next-generation M3 family of silicon. The event brought major GPU upgrades to refreshed 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros powered by M3 Pro and Max, alongside an overdue refresh for the 24-inch iMac.
Apple is getting into the Halloween spirit with a late-night Mac event titled "Scary Fast."
Streaming live on October 30 at 5 PM Pacific via Apple's website, YouTube, and the Apple TV app, the showcase pivots away from iPads or audio gear to focus purely on next-generation Apple silicon.
M3 silicon hits MacBook Pro and iMac
All signs point to the debut of the M3 chip family across desktop and laptop lines.
According to reports, the refreshed 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros are set to receive M3 Pro and M3 Max processors. The upgrade is expected to deliver significant GPU gains over the M2 generation, targeting power users and creative pros.
Meanwhile, the 24-inch iMac is finally getting some attention after more than a year without updates. It is expected to jump to the base M3 chip for improved speed and graphics, potentially alongside new colors like orange, blue, and pink.
Apple is also expected to clean up its accessories ecosystem. Updated Magic Keyboards, Magic Mice, and Magic Trackpads could drop the legacy Lightning port in favor of USB-C.
Why it matters
This event is about resetting the Mac upgrade cycle.
For anyone still hanging onto an M1 machine or an Intel Mac, M3 will likely present a meaningful performance leap. But for current M2 owners, incremental GPU jumps might not be enough to justify the upgrade cost.
We think shifting Mac accessories to USB-C is long overdue and a smart way to complete the transition started by recent iPhones. While the event looks more like a steady silicon refresh than an overhaul, keeping GPU gains steady allows Apple to stay ahead in efficiency across both creative and general-purpose computing.
