Apple Podcasts just added transcripts for almost everything
Apple is rolling out automated transcripts across Apple Podcasts in the iOS 17.4 beta, powered by its machine learning models. Beta testers report that nearly all shows in Apple's network now display full text. Episodes added via external URLs are currently excluded, with a general release expected in March.
Finding a specific quote in an hour-long podcast usually means scrubbing back and forth on a tiny progress bar and hoping for the best.
Apple is finally fixing that frustration. In the first developer beta of iOS 17.4, the company rolled out auto-generated transcripts for Apple Podcasts.
Shortly after a creator publishes a new episode to Apple's network, the system automatically creates a full text transcript. Listeners do not have to wait for creators to manually upload their own scripts.
Read along like lyrics and search anywhere
According to initial tests from 9to5Mac and AppleInsider, the feature feels a lot like time-synced lyrics in Apple Music.
A new quotation mark icon sits in the bottom toolbar on the Now Playing screen. Tap it, and the transcript scrolls along with the audio, highlighting each word in real time.
If you want to skip ahead to a specific talking point, you can simply tap any line in the text to jump playback right there. You can also long-press an episode in your library to open a plaintext version without playing it, which includes full in-text search for specific terms.
There are a few guardrails. Apple notes that dynamically inserted audio changes won't be reflected in the original transcript, and song lyrics are excluded. Episodes added manually via external RSS feed URLs also do not support transcripts in the current beta.
Alongside the transcripts, iOS 17.4 updates the Now Playing bottom navigation bar with a floating design similar to Apple Music.
Why it matters
We think this is one of the most practical additions to Apple Podcasts in years.
For everyday listeners, it completely solves the discovery problem in spoken audio. You can quickly skim a two-hour interview to see if it is worth your time, grab exact quotes for notes, or follow along with technical discussions effortlessly.
For the podcast app landscape, Apple is putting serious pressure on third-party developers. Niche podcast players and standalone AI transcription tools have long charged subscriptions for automatic transcriptions. With Apple offering this natively for free, competitors will have to double down on features Apple still lacks, like Overcast's beloved smart silence trimming.
It is a smart, friction-free implementation that leverages Apple Music's familiar UI. The obvious limitation is the exclusion of custom URL feeds, and how accurately it handles non-English accents will only become clear when iOS 17.4 rolls out publicly in March.
