Apple News+ rolls out Emoji Game using Genmoji
Apple just introduced Emoji Game for Apple News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, turning casual icons into a daily brainteaser. Players use a curated set of emoji — including Genmoji created via Apple Intelligence — to fill in phrase blanks using as few moves as possible. It is a subtle way for Apple to weave its generative AI tools directly into daily casual habits.

The New York Times proved that daily brainteasers like Wordle are the ultimate weapon against subscriber churn. Apple took notes, and now it is adding a fresh twist by putting its own AI to work.
Apple News+ just introduced Emoji Game, an original puzzle available for subscribers in the U.S. and Canada. The English-language game requires devices running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later.
Guessing phrases with Genmoji
The premise is simple yet addictive. Players are tasked with using a selection of emoji to fill in the blanks of three short phrases using as few moves as possible.
Here is the clever part: the available emoji pool includes Genmoji created using Apple Intelligence. If you get stuck, each phrase comes with a clue you can reveal, though doing so adds to your total move count. Once finished, you can check your standings on Game Center leaderboards or brag via Messages, Mail, and social platforms.
Emoji Game lives in the Puzzles section of the Apple News app alongside existing favorites like crosswords, Quartiles, and sudoku, with access to both daily challenges and archived games.
Apple also confirmed that subscribers will be able to play Emoji Game later this fall through Apple Games, a brand-new dedicated app designed to serve as a central gaming hub.
Why it matters
For subscribers, Emoji Game is a charming, zero-friction daily diversion that adds immediate utility to a service already packed with over 400 publications, curated sports coverage, and a recently launched Food section featuring tens of thousands of recipes.
For Apple, this is a calculated retention move. Serious reporting wins prestige, but casual puzzle habits keep people paying monthly fees when budgets tighten. Tying daily puzzles directly to Apple News is straight out of the modern media playbook.
We also like how Apple is integrating Apple Intelligence. Genmoji could easily have remained a novelty relegated to random iMessage threads. Baking AI-generated stickers directly into an official editorial game gives Apple Intelligence an organic, everyday reason to exist.
The real challenge will be scaling it beyond English-speaking borders. Emoji riddles rely heavily on cultural idioms and linguistic quirks, meaning localizing this puzzle across international markets will not be nearly as straightforward as rolling out a standard sudoku board.
