Apple Music is coming to ChatGPT

Published Reach 31

Apple Music is officially heading to ChatGPT, allowing users to build custom playlists directly through chat prompts and sync them to their library. The feature builds on OpenAI's upcoming Apps SDK preview, which previously brought similar integrations to Spotify. Why it matters: ChatGPT is steadily evolving from a conversational chatbot into an action-oriented interface for your daily apps.

Tired of generic streaming algorithms serving up the exact same twenty songs every time you ask for a moody playlist? You might soon have a much sharper curator waiting inside your favorite chatbot.

OpenAI's CEO of Applications Fidji Simo revealed in a Substack post that Apple Music is actively developing an official ChatGPT integration, bringing Apple's music service straight into the conversational AI interface.

Natural-language DJ inside your chats

While the integration is still under development, the mechanics look nearly identical to what OpenAI already rolled out for Spotify.

Instead of hunting through pre-made mixes or building lists track by track, users will be able to prompt ChatGPT with highly specific, vibe-based requests. ChatGPT generates the tracklist, and those songs pop directly into your connected Apple Music library as a ready-to-play playlist.

This move is part of a much bigger platform push. OpenAI recently previewed its Apps software development kit (SDK), and tech outlet 9to5Mac speculates the toolkit is close to shedding its preview tag.

OpenAI has already hooked up heavy hitters like Spotify, Canva, Figma, Coursera, Booking.com, Expedia, and Zillow. According to Simo, an expanded directory is landing soon with partners like Adobe, Airtable, Clay, Lovable, OpenTable, Replit, and Salesforce, followed by an open review process for third-party developers.

As Simo put it, OpenAI knows it cannot build everything on its own. The real utility comes from connecting ChatGPT to the tools people already rely on and serving them up at the exact right moment.

Why it matters

For everyday listeners, this fixes one of streaming's lingering pain points: playlist creation takes actual work. Large language models excel at processing nuanced, situational text, like asking for instrumental hip-hop from the late nineties that feels like cruising at night. Being able to spit that prompt out and immediately see a curated Apple Music playlist is an immediate, frictionless quality-of-life upgrade.

For the broader tech scene, it shows the growing depth of the Apple and OpenAI alliance. We already have ChatGPT built into Apple Intelligence, and now Apple's marquee media subscription is returning the favor by anchoring inside OpenAI's ecosystem.

We think OpenAI's strategy here is fundamentally smart. Moving away from the half-baked plugins of the past toward polished, direct API tie-ins via a proper SDK turns ChatGPT into an operating layer for everyday software. The real catch will be retention: if cross-app authentication gets clunky or licensing gaps lead to missing tracks in generated playlists, users might just bounce back to their native music apps.
