Apple drops Watch Ultra 3 with satellite SOS and AI workout buddy

Published Reach 36

Apple just unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 3, adding built-in two-way satellite messaging, a larger LTPO3 display, and up to 42 hours of battery life. Alongside machine-learning-driven hypertension risk alerts, it debuts Workout Buddy, an Apple Intelligence feature that delivers real-time spoken coaching tailored to your pace and heart rate. Why it matters: It deepens Apple's blend of outdoor survival and proactive health, though the AI coach requires a compatible iPhone.

If you have ever been deep in the backcountry with a dead phone, you know that sickening feeling of being completely off the grid. Apple is trying to turn your wrist into the ultimate safety net.

Apple announced the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The biggest leap forward is not just raw processing power, but standalone two-way satellite connectivity built straight into the titanium chassis. Pre-orders are live now, with shipping starting Friday, September 19.

Satellite comms right from your wrist

Until now, satellite SOS required keeping your iPhone nearby and charged. With the Ultra 3, the watch handles emergency messaging entirely on its own.

Users can text emergency dispatchers, update family members, and send their location via Find My every 15 minutes without cellular or Wi-Fi. It also supports end-to-end encrypted texts and SMS to contacts you have messaged in the last 30 days. All satellite features are free for two years.

Squeezing satellite connectivity into a watch-sized device required completely redesigning the radio and doubling antenna signal strength. That allows it to hit satellites orbiting 800 miles above Earth moving at 15,000 mph. If the watch detects a severe crash or hard fall while you are off the grid and unresponsive, it will attempt to beam an automated distress signal autonomously.

When you are back in civilization, the Ultra 3 now supports 5G cellular. A smart dual-antenna system engages both antennas simultaneously whenever signal drops to prevent dead zones.

Slimmer bezels, longer battery, and blood pressure alerts

The case size remains identical, but Apple shaved display borders by 24 percent using LTPO3 and wide-angle OLED tech. That gives you more active screen real estate and wider viewing angles.

The LTPO3 panel also drops power consumption, allowing the always-on display to refresh at 1Hz instead of once a minute. You can finally watch a ticking second hand without waking the display.

Battery life climbs to 42 hours under regular daily use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. For long-distance endurance athletes, tracking an outdoor workout with full GPS and heart rate in Low Power Mode now lasts 20 hours. A quick 15-minute charge delivers about 12 hours of use.

On the health front, Apple introduced passive hypertension notifications. By analyzing how blood vessels respond to heartbeats via the optical sensor over 30-day windows, the algorithm alerts you if it detects consistent signs of chronic high blood pressure. Trained on over 100,000 participants and clinically validated on 2,000, Apple expects it to flag undiagnosed conditions for over a million people in year one. It will arrive via watchOS 26, which also brings a new Sleep Score and an Apple Intelligence-powered Workout Buddy.

Why it matters

For ultra-runners, backcountry skiers, and outdoor enthusiasts, having standalone satellite capability on the wrist is a genuine upgrade. If you tumble down a ravine and lose your pack, having two-way SOS strapped to your body is a literal lifesaver. You no longer need to carry a separate satellite communicator for day trips.

For everyday city dwellers, upgrading from an Ultra 2 feels harder to justify unless you desperately want the 1Hz ticking second hand and slightly better battery life. The hypertension alerts are promising, but since they are also coming to Series 9 and Ultra 2 via watchOS 26, existing owners already get the software perk.

This move puts immense pressure on Garmin. Garmin has owned the outdoor endurance market thanks to bulletproof multi-week battery and rugged satellite integrations via separate inReach devices. Apple is steadily turning its consumer smartwatch into an independent survival tool that does not require an iPhone tether.

We think putting satellite communications directly into the watch radio without adding bulk was an engineering triumph. However, battery life remains Apple's persistent Achilles' heel. While 42 hours is an improvement, true multi-day thru-hikers will still find 20 hours of workout tracking insufficient compared to Garmin's solar-powered endurance rigs.
