Apple designs custom chips for smart glasses and AI servers
Apple is reportedly developing custom silicon for two smart glasses models—one for daily smart tasks and another with full AR—adapted from Apple Watch tech and targeting mass production by 2026 or 2027. The company is also upgrading chips across AirPods, Watches, and enterprise AI servers to rival Meta.
Strapping a heavy computer to your face was never going to be the mass-market endgame. Following the lukewarm reception of the bulky Vision Pro, Apple is finally getting serious about shrinking its ambition down to everyday eyewear.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is actively developing custom chips for two distinct types of smart glasses: a display-less pair focused on daily smart tasks, and a more advanced set with full augmented reality capabilities. The custom processors are slated to enter mass production by late 2026 or sometime in 2027, setting up a product launch in that same timeframe.
Stripping down the Watch silicon
Rather than designing an architecture from scratch, Apple is reportedly adapting the processor design currently powering the Apple Watch. Engineers are removing unnecessary components to hit strict thermal and space limits while fine-tuning the silicon to process input from multiple onboard cameras.
The hardware roadmap mirrors Meta's playbook almost identically. The basic smart glasses are aimed squarely at Ray-Ban Meta glasses, which have quietly become a breakout hit. The advanced AR pair will take on Meta’s upcoming consumer AR glasses, following the Orion prototype shown off last year, which Meta also expects to ship to buyers around 2027.
Apple is not stopping at eyewear. The report notes the company is simultaneously designing chips for camera-equipped AirPods and Apple Watches for roughly 2027, alongside fresh M-series silicon and in-house AI chips designed exclusively for its data center servers.
Why it matters
This looks like Apple acknowledging a hard reality: mainstream adoption won't happen through bulky headsets, no matter how crisp the screens are. People want lightweight, normal-looking frames that let them capture memories and interact with voice AI on the go. If Apple can pair its seamless ecosystem integration with frames that don't weigh down your nose, millions of iPhone users will jump.
Repurposing Apple Watch silicon is a clever move. It lets Apple leverage years of miniaturization and power-efficiency gains without spending billions on a greenfield chip design. But the technical hurdles remain massive. Processing multiple camera feeds simultaneously generates heat, and battery real estate on an eyeglass temple is virtually nonexistent.
For the broader tech landscape, 2027 is quickly shaping up to be the real battleground for ambient computing. Meta and Apple are now on an identical timeline. By developing custom silicon that stretches from AirPods and glasses all the way to its own AI data centers, Apple is preparing a proprietary stack that rivals will find nearly impossible to replicate.
