Apple teams up with Anthropic for vibe-coding in Xcode
Apple is reportedly collaborating with Anthropic to overhaul Xcode by integrating Claude Sonnet for an AI coding assistant. The tool handles chat-based code generation, UI testing, and bug fixes. It is currently being rolled out to Apple engineers internally after in-house efforts stalled, with a broader public release still undecided.

Even Apple’s own engineers are tired of writing boilerplate code by hand.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Apple is teaming up with Anthropic to build a new AI-powered "vibe-coding" platform. Basically, Apple is taking Anthropic’s powerhouse Claude Sonnet model and integrating it directly into an updated version of Xcode.
The new tool features a conversational chat interface where engineers can ask the AI to write, alter, and review code. It can also test user interfaces and handle pesky bug fixes, mimicking modern standalone AI editors like Windsurf and Anysphere’s Cursor.
Swapping broken promises for Claude
Apple turning to Anthropic is a clear admission that its internal efforts hit a wall.
Apple previously announced Swift Assist, an in-house AI coding companion intended for Xcode with a planned 2024 rollout. That tool never saw the light of day because internal teams were concerned about its reliability.
Now, Apple is rolling out this Claude-powered Xcode internally to help its own staff streamline workflows and modernize software development. For now, there is no official timeline for a public launch, though sources say a broader release to third-party developers could happen if internal tests go well. Representatives from both Apple and Anthropic declined to comment.
Pragmatism over pure in-house pride
This partnership shows just how much Apple has softened its historical reluctance to rely on outside AI.
While Apple Intelligence features like custom emoji and writing tools run on internal models, Apple has increasingly leaned on outsiders where it trails behind. Siri already taps OpenAI’s ChatGPT, with Google’s Gemini slated for later this year. Meanwhile, Anthropic is also working with Amazon on Alexa+, and OpenAI is reportedly in talks to buy coding startup Windsurf for around $3 billion.
Why it matters
We think this is one of the smartest and most realistic pivots Apple has made recently.
For developers, native Claude integration inside Xcode would be an absolute game-changer. Right now, tons of Apple platform devs juggle Cursor for writing code and Xcode for compiling and simulator testing. Merging high-tier frontier reasoning directly into the native IDE would save endless context-switching headaches, assuming Apple eventually ships it publicly.
For the industry, it cements Anthropic’s reputation as the undisputed king of code generation. When Apple admits its own Swift Assist wasn't up to par and hands the keys to Claude, that sends a massive signal to the market.
The potential catch lies in privacy and performance. Apple’s entire brand is built on strict data confidentiality, and funneling internal proprietary code through third-party frontier models creates unavoidable governance friction. But right now, shipping modern tools matters more than corporate pride.
