Anthropic nears $20B revenue as Claude downloads surge

Published Reach 45

Anthropic just crossed a $19 billion annual revenue run rate, more than doubling its numbers from late 2025. After CEO Dario Amodei refused Pentagon demands to use its AI for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, Anthropic was labeled a supply-chain risk—triggering a consumer rally that pushed Claude past ChatGPT in daily U.S. mobile downloads.

Getting branded a supply chain risk by the Pentagon is usually a death sentence for an enterprise tech company. For Anthropic, it just triggered the fastest consumer explosion the AI sector has seen this year.

According to Bloomberg, Anthropic has now crossed a $19 billion annualized revenue run rate, sprinting toward the $20 billion milestone. To put that in perspective, the startup was sitting at around $9 billion at the end of 2025 and roughly $14 billion just weeks ago.

The Pentagon standoff that minted billions

The spike is largely fueled by massive adoption of Claude's models and its coding assistant, Claude Code. But the timing tells a wild story.

Anthropic recently found itself in an intense standoff with the US Department of Defense. CEO Dario Amodei drew a hard line, refusing to let Claude be used for mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. In retaliation, the Pentagon slapped the company with a supply chain risk label, putting its lucrative government deals on the chopping block.

Instead of spooking the market, that moral stand sparked an immediate consumer backlash in Anthropic's favor.

Beating ChatGPT on downloads and topping app stores

The numbers coming out of early March are eye-popping. App analytics firm Appfigures reported that on March 2, Claude notched 149,000 daily mobile downloads in the US, easily beating ChatGPT's 124,000.

Similarweb data confirms the surge is translating into real engagement. Claude's daily active mobile users reached 11.3 million on March 2, up a staggering 183% from roughly 4 million at the start of the year. That puts Claude comfortably ahead of rivals like Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot.

Anthropic confirmed the momentum, stating that Claude is now pulling in over 1 million new signups per day. It also hit the No. 1 spot on the iOS App Store in the US and 15 other countries, including the UK, France, and Germany. A spokesperson noted that mobile daily active users have more than tripled since early 2026, while paid subscriptions have doubled.

Why it matters

For builders and daily users, Claude Code and the Claude app are proving to be top-tier tools backed by something rare in AI: an explicit line in the sand around civil liberties. If you were on the fence about moving workflows away from legacy chatbots, Anthropic is giving you both the performance and the peace of mind to justify testing it right now.

For the broader tech ecosystem, this reshapes enterprise AI dynamics. Big tech has historically bent over backward to secure massive defense contracts. Anthropic just showed that defying defense demands can generate an enormous grassroots moat of consumer goodwill and developer loyalty.

We think Amodei's gamble was brilliant, turning a potential regulatory blacklist into the ultimate brand marketing campaign. But it does leave Anthropic with real exposure. Walking away from government billions means the company must rely entirely on commercial subscriptions to foot its eye-watering compute bills, all while ChatGPT still sits on an imposing base of 250 million daily active users.
