Anthropic officially launches Claude with two model options
Anthropic just made its next-gen AI assistant Claude available across chat and API. Designed to be helpful, honest, and harmless, it arrives in two versions: the flagship Claude and a faster, cheaper Claude Instant. Early partners like Notion and Quora highlight its steerability and natural conversational style.

For months, OpenAI felt like the only game in town for frontier chat models. That just changed.
Anthropic officially launched Claude, its next-generation AI assistant built on research into creating helpful, honest, and harmless systems. After months of testing behind closed doors with partners like Notion, Quora, and DuckDuckGo, the model is now available through both a chat interface and a developer API.
Early users report that Claude feels easier to steer, can adapt its tone and personality on demand, and is significantly less prone to generating harmful outputs.
A two-tier lineup with serious enterprise backing
Anthropic isn't just shipping a single monolithic model. It rolled out two distinct flavors today.
First is Claude, the flagship high-performance model designed for complex analysis and creative reasoning. Alongside it sits Claude Instant, a lighter, substantially faster, and cheaper alternative built for high-throughput tasks.
Anthropic also brought receipts from its closed alpha to prove enterprise readiness.
Quora integrated Claude into its Poe chat app, where users noted that conversations feel noticeably more natural and interactive than with ChatGPT. Notion tapped Claude's creative writing and summarization skills to power Notion AI directly inside the workspace.
Meanwhile, Juni Learning used it to build an academic tutoring bot on Discord, praising its ability to explain math and literary symbolism like a real tutor rather than giving surface-level answers. DuckDuckGo is using Claude to power Wikipedia summaries in its privacy-first DuckAssist tool, and legal startup Robin AI is relying on it to parse and rewrite dense contracts.
Why it matters
Anthropic just gave developers and businesses their first viable, enterprise-grade alternative to OpenAI. If you are building products in sensitive domains like education, legal tech, or customer support where hallucinations and rogue outputs can sink your company, Claude Instant and Claude are worth testing immediately for their steerability and lower risk profile.
For the AI landscape, this moves the market away from a single vendor bottleneck. We think Anthropic's decision to launch with a budget-friendly "Instant" tier alongside its flagship is a savvy commercial move: it tackles the dual headaches of latency and API costs right out of the gate.
That said, Anthropic's "harmless" brand identity will face its real stress test now. Controlled closed alphas are very different from the open internet, and we will soon see whether Claude can maintain its helpful demeanor without becoming overly cautious when thousands of developers start prodding its boundaries.
