Anthropic covers copyright lawsuits and rolls out Messages API
Anthropic just updated its commercial terms to defend customers against copyright infringement claims, promising to cover settlements and judgments from authorized use. The company also introduced a beta Messages API that streamlines prompt construction and sets the stage for upcoming function calling.

If you are an enterprise trying to deploy AI into actual business workflows, two things probably keep your legal and engineering teams up at night: copyright lawsuits and messy API prompt formatting.
Anthropic just rolled out updates tackling both issues at once.
Anthropic steps up to cover legal bills
Anthropic introduced updated Commercial Terms of Service featuring an expanded copyright indemnity. Under the new agreement, customers retain ownership over any outputs they generate with Claude.
More importantly, Anthropic pledges to defend customers from copyright infringement claims stemming from authorized use of its services or outputs. The company will also pay any approved settlements or court judgments.
These terms take effect on January 1, 2024 for direct Claude API customers, and January 2, 2024 for users accessing Claude through Amazon Bedrock.
Messages API arrives to clean up prompt construction
On the developer side, Anthropic launched a beta Messages API.
Dynamic prompt construction has notoriously been prone to subtle formatting mistakes. The new structured API is designed to catch these errors much earlier in development so teams can get cleaner outputs from Claude models.
Anthropic notes that this structured API lays the groundwork for upcoming capabilities, including robust function calling. Access to the Claude API will also broaden in the coming weeks.
Why it matters
We think the enterprise AI race is rapidly shifting from benchmark scores to corporate peace of mind.
With Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google having already announced similar copyright defense commitments, Anthropic had to match the industry standard. Without this shield, risk-averse enterprise legal teams simply would not sign off on deploying Claude in customer-facing production.
For developers, the Messages API solves a very real, everyday headache. Moving to a structured format not only reduces debugging frustration, but it also signals that proper tool use and agentic workflows are finally arriving on Claude.
