Anthropic's next-gen Claude models leak across Vertex AI and web UI

Published Reach 50

Anthropic just had its upcoming AI lineup exposed on multiple fronts. Developers spotted a claude-opus-4.8 identifier inside Google Vertex AI, while the safety-focused Mythos 1 briefly surfaced in Claude's web interface alongside references to Claude Security. With leaked source code also showing Sonnet skipping 4.7 straight to 4.8, a major model refresh is clearly imminent.

AI labs are notoriously bad at keeping secrets, but Anthropic's pipeline just had one of its biggest unscripted reveals yet.

Over the past few days, developers digging through cloud backends and web assets found clear evidence that Anthropic is prepping a sweeping model refresh across its entire tier list.

Between a new top-tier Opus, an upgraded Sonnet, and a once-restricted security model poking its head into public views, the next release wave looks ready to roll.

Opus 4.8 leaks in Google's backyard

The first domino fell when a developer named can noticed a new entry inside Google Vertex AI: claude-opus-4.8.

This is not the first time Google's platform served as an unintentional preview. Both Opus 4.6 and Opus 4.7 were discovered in Vertex backends shortly before Anthropic officially rolled them out.

Considering Opus 4.7 launched only about a month ago, seeing an Opus 4.8 build already staging in cloud infrastructure suggests Anthropic is pushing release cycles to an aggressive pace.

Mythos 1 and the skipping Sonnet

While Opus targets raw intelligence, the bigger surprise came from Mythos 1. According to tracking site TestingCatalog, users briefly spotted a Mythos 1 model selector inside the Claude web UI, backed by references to claude-mythos-1-preview, Claude Code, and Claude Security.

Anthropic previously labeled Mythos as a restricted security research tool that helped identify high-severity vulnerabilities. But recent Project Glasswing documentation referencing an eventual general release hints at an evolving strategy, complete with an enterprise-facing security dashboard.

Meanwhile, Sonnet 4.8 is already an open secret thanks to a late-March npm package packaging mistake that exposed 512,000 lines of internal source code. That leak confirmed Anthropic plans to skip Sonnet 4.7 entirely.

Community teardowns suggest Sonnet 4.8 will bring over 98% visual accuracy, inherit high-end reasoning tiers dubbed X high, and feature an updated tokenizer that could unfortunately raise token usage by roughly 30%.

Why it matters

Anthropic is clearly building a two-pronged wedge around software development: generating clean code with Sonnet and policing vulnerabilities with Mythos.

For developers and enterprises, turning Mythos into a commercial Claude Security offering could reshape offensive and defensive security workflows. If an agent can reliably spot deep codebase flaws before deployment, security audits become continuous rather than quarterly. Still, the reported 30% token overhead on the new Sonnet tokenizer means teams will need to watch API bills closely once it lands.

In the broader race against upcoming releases from OpenAI and Google's Gemini lineup, Anthropic is trying to lock down developer mindshare before competitors shift the goalposts again. Pushing updates at this tempo proves that leading AI labs now view productization speed as just as critical as raw model weights.
