Claude finally gets a voice on mobile

Published Reach 49

Anthropic just rolled out a beta Voice mode for its Claude mobile apps, powered by the new Sonnet 4 model. The feature supports five voice personalities with real-time transcription and Google Workspace integration for paid tiers. Why it matters: Anthropic was the last major holdout without voice, shifting the assistant battle to execution and latency.

Anthropic just gave Claude a voice, officially ending its run as the last major AI holdout to resist the audio wave.

The company announced a new beta Voice mode for its Claude mobile apps, letting users have natural back-and-forth spoken chats instead of just typing prompts.

Sonnet 4 brains and Workspace tools

The feature runs directly on Claude's latest Sonnet 4 model and will roll out to English-speaking users over the coming weeks.

Anthropic built in five distinct voice personalities. You can switch smoothly between talking and typing whenever you want, with real-time text transcription scrolling on the screen as you talk.

Paid subscribers get an extra productivity boost with Google Workspace integration. You can issue hands-free voice commands to have Claude check your calendar, search Google Docs, or pull up emails from Gmail.

Free users get 20 to 30 voice messages each month, while paid tiers come with significantly higher usage caps.

Why it matters

Now that every top-tier lab has an interactive voice assistant, the battle shifts from novel tech demos to pure daily utility.

For users, voice makes Claude vastly more practical while on the go. Tying real-time speech into Google Workspace transforms it from an analytical chatbot into an actionable executive assistant that handles mundane scheduling and inbox triaging.

Compared to legacy assistants like Siri that still struggle with basic intent, running voice conversations directly on Sonnet 4 is a night-and-day leap in conversational depth.

We think Anthropic played it smart by baking in workspace actions right at launch. However, giving free tier users only 20 to 30 messages a month feels pretty stingy, showing that the server costs of real-time voice inference are still pinching AI providers.
