Anthropic adds national security veteran Richard Fontaine to trust board
Anthropic just appointed Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security, to its independent Long-Term Benefit Trust. Fontaine brings decades of defense and foreign policy experience to help guide the company through AI-driven geopolitical risks. The independent trust oversees board selection without holding any financial stake in the startup.

Top AI labs used to staff their oversight boards with ethicists and computer scientists.
Anthropic is taking a decidedly different route, bringing in a seasoned national security strategist who knows the Pentagon and Capitol Hill inside out.
Anthropic announced that Richard Fontaine, CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), has joined its Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT).
A Washington heavyweight joins the trust
Fontaine brings an extensive government resume to the role.
He previously served on the National Security Council, worked inside the State Department, advised lawmakers on Capitol Hill, and spent four years on the Defense Policy Board.
His appointment comes at a moment when frontier AI capabilities are colliding directly with geopolitical tensions and national defense.
LTBT Chair Buddy Shah noted that Fontaine brings critical perspective to guide Anthropic through powerful AI's impact on global security.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei echoed the sentiment, stating that democratic leadership in responsible AI is essential for both global stability and the international balance of power.
The power behind the LTBT
To understand why this appointment carries weight, you have to look at how Anthropic is built.
Anthropic operates as a Public Benefit Corporation, and the LTBT is an independent body explicitly designed to hold the company to its public-interest mission.
Crucially, the trust selects members of Anthropic's Board of Directors and advises leadership on navigating catastrophic risks.
Trustees have zero financial stake in Anthropic, insulating them from short-term share prices and commercial incentives.
Fontaine himself noted that after talks with Dario and Daniela Amodei, he views the trust as a critical mechanism to steer high-stakes governance as transformative AI approaches.
Why it matters
Frontier AI governance is no longer just about red-teaming code or debating alignment philosophy. It has become a core geopolitical issue.
For enterprise customers and developers, Claude is increasingly positioning itself as the most defense-aware and policy-aligned frontier model on the market.
We think Anthropic played this smartly. Bringing a heavyweight like Fontaine into an independent, equity-free oversight trust builds immense credibility in Washington without triggering immediate accusations of commercial bias.
However, it also highlights an emerging tension.
The LTBT was designed to protect the broader public benefit of humanity, but national security is fundamentally about strategic advantage and geopolitical alignment.
Balancing global safety with national security interests will be the trust's toughest assignment yet.
