Andrej Karpathy launches AI school Eureka Labs

Published Reach 44

AI pioneer Andrej Karpathy just unveiled Eureka Labs, a startup building an "AI-native" school. The idea pairs human teacher-designed materials with personalized AI teaching assistants to guide students, starting with an undergraduate-level course called LLM101n that walks learners through training their own AI.

Imagine having Richard Feynman sitting right next to you, patiently guiding you through every physics equation step by step, in your native language.

That dream learning experience has always been impossible to scale. Experts who are world-class communicators, infinitely patient, and fluent in every language simply cannot tutor 8 billion people on demand.

Until now. Former OpenAI co-founder and Tesla AI head Andrej Karpathy just announced his next chapter: an AI-native education company called Eureka Labs.

Karpathy envisions a new kind of school powered by a Teacher plus AI symbiosis. Under this model, human experts design the curriculum, while an optimized AI Teaching Assistant handles the personalized day-to-day guidance for every student.

Building LLM101n from scratch

Eureka Labs is kicking things off with its first product, which Karpathy boldly calls the world's obviously best AI course: LLM101n.

It is an undergraduate-level program designed to walk students through training their own AI model from scratch. In a meta twist, the model students build is essentially a smaller version of the AI Teaching Assistant helping them learn.

Course materials will be available online for free self-study, but Eureka Labs also plans to run digital and physical cohorts for people wanting a collaborative classroom feel.

This is not a random pivot for Karpathy. His teaching credentials stretch back nearly two decades, from making Rubik's cube tutorials on YouTube to creating Stanford's legendary CS231n and his recent Zero-to-Hero neural network videos.

While he was doing frontier research at OpenAI and building self-driving tech at Tesla, education was always a part-time side quest. Now, he is turning that passion into his full-time gig, building in public from day one.

Why it matters

In our view, Karpathy's approach here is uniquely compelling because he is avoiding the trap of building a generic AI chatbot and calling it a tutor.

Most existing edtech tools slap a ChatGPT wrapper onto an old homework repository. Eureka Labs is designing the course material and the AI assistant in tandem, ensuring the AI deeply understands the exact curriculum it is teaching.

For developers and aspiring engineers, LLM101n will almost certainly be an instant must-try. Learning to train a model with Karpathy's pedagogy and an always-available assistant could dramatically lower the barrier to real AI engineering.

That said, the challenge will be pedagogic control. AI tutors often struggle to strike the balance between nudging a student toward an answer and just hallucinating or blurting out the solution. If Eureka Labs solves that guidance problem, they could establish the blueprint for what online learning looks like in the post-AI era.
