AMD and OpenAI strike 6GW GPU mega-deal
AMD and OpenAI just announced a massive deal to deploy 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs for next-gen AI infrastructure. The rollout kicks off in the second half of 2026 with an initial 1-gigawatt deployment of Instinct MI450 chips. AMD is also granting OpenAI warrants for up to 160 million shares tied to delivery milestones.

For the past few years, the frontier AI buildout has basically meant one thing: waiting in line to buy every GPU Nvidia could produce. Now, OpenAI is officially making room for a massive second pillar.
OpenAI and AMD just announced a multi-year, multi-generation strategic partnership to deploy a staggering 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs. The rollout will kick off in the second half of 2026 with an initial 1 gigawatt deployment of AMD's upcoming Instinct MI450 series GPUs and rack-scale solutions.
Equity carrots for enterprise scale
A 6-gigawatt power footprint is colossal, enough to power millions of homes or several massive data center campuses. But what makes this deal especially fascinating is the financial engineering behind it.
To closely align their long-term interests, AMD has granted OpenAI a warrant to purchase up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock. The warrant vests in tranches tied to real-world deployment milestones.
The first block vests once that initial 1 gigawatt goes live, with the rest unlocking as purchases ramp all the way to 6 gigawatts. Vesting is also contingent on AMD hitting specific share-price targets and OpenAI hitting the technical and commercial milestones needed to make AMD clusters run smoothly at scale.
According to AMD CFO Jean Hu, the deal is expected to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD and be highly accretive to its non-GAAP earnings. The two companies aren't starting from scratch either; they have already been collaborating across software and hardware stacks on the MI300X and MI350X lineups.
Why it matters
We think this agreement represents the biggest diversification push in AI hardware history. Relying solely on one vendor was always a dangerous long-term strategy for OpenAI, both in terms of pricing power and supply-chain vulnerability.
For the broader tech ecosystem, having OpenAI commit to AMD at this scale is the ultimate stamp of approval. The biggest bottleneck holding back non-Nvidia hardware has always been the software ecosystem, but OpenAI actively optimizing AMD's rack-scale roadmap means ROCm is about to get world-class stress testing.
AMD played this brilliantly. By offering a hefty equity incentive tied to operational milestones, they effectively turned their biggest customer into an equity-motivated partner. If OpenAI can make MI450 clusters hum at scale by late 2026, it will finally give the entire industry a credible, production-ready alternative at the absolute frontier.
