AlphaFold lead John Jumper jumps to Anthropic
Nobel laureate and AlphaFold pioneer John Jumper just announced he is leaving Google DeepMind after nearly nine years to join Anthropic. Jumper thanked CEO Demis Hassabis for trusting him to lead the protein-folding project fresh out of his PhD, noting he plans to take time to recharge before starting his new role.

Where do you go after winning a Nobel Prize for revolutionizing structural biology? If you are John Jumper, you pack your bags and head to Anthropic.
After nearly nine years at Google DeepMind, the computer scientist and chemist who co-created AlphaFold announced on Friday that he is leaving the lab. Jumper plans to take some time to recharge before officially starting his new gig at the Claude creator.
In his exit note on X, Jumper credited DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for taking a massive gamble on him, handing him the reins of the AlphaFold project just six months after he finished his PhD. Hassabis praised their shared milestone, noting that AlphaFold changed the world and showed what AI for science and medicine could actually accomplish.
From proteins to programming
Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Hassabis for AlphaFold, an AI model that predicts 3D protein structures from genetic sequences. To date, AlphaFold has generated more than 200 million predictions, slashing years off biological research timelines across the globe.
Yet Jumper's recent work at Google stretched beyond molecular biology. According to Bloomberg, he was also a key member of the team developing coding tools, an area where Google has reportedly struggled to gain commercial traction with enterprise buyers.
His departure caps a brutal week for DeepMind's talent roster. Just days earlier, Character AI co-founder and Transformer co-author Noam Shazeer also announced he was exiting DeepMind, heading instead to OpenAI.
Why it matters
Landing a sitting Nobel laureate is a massive flex for Anthropic, and it signals a broader shift in where the frontier of AI research truly lives.
While Jumper has not disclosed his exact role at Anthropic, his dual expertise in AI for science and coding models makes him a rare asset. Anthropic could use him to spearhead a brand-new scientific discovery vertical, or tap his systems-level engineering chops to supercharge Claude's coding capabilities. As both Anthropic and OpenAI position themselves ahead of potential public listings, bagging foundational talent like Jumper gives immense credibility to their technical ambitions.
For Google, the optics are painful. DeepMind was once viewed as the ultimate sanctuary for researchers who wanted unlimited compute without corporate red tape. But between Jumper jumping to Anthropic and Shazeer defecting to OpenAI in the same week, we think it looks increasingly clear that Big Tech's bureaucratic weight is pushing frontier minds toward leaner, faster-moving labs.
