Qwen Code v0.5.0 brings VSCode integration and TypeScript SDK
Alibaba Qwen just released Qwen Code v0.5.0, bundling its CLI directly into VSCode alongside a native TypeScript SDK. The update introduces smart session auto-saving and expands model compatibility to OpenAI-compatible reasoning models like DeepSeek V3.2 and Kimi-K2. It makes plugging open reasoning models straight into developer terminals much easier.

Breaking out of the walled garden
Alibaba just dropped Qwen Code v0.5.0, packaging its CLI directly into VSCode release packages to iron out cross-platform quirks.
The update ships with a native TypeScript SDK for seamless Node integration, alongside smart session management that automatically saves your work so you can resume coding threads anytime via terminal commands.
Crucially, the tool isn't locked into Alibaba's own models. Version 0.5.0 adds support for OpenAI-compatible reasoning models, explicitly including DeepSeek V3.2 and Kimi-K2.
Developers can also orchestrate custom tools through SDK-hosted servers, and the release introduces Russian language localization plus audio alerts for terminal notifications.
Why it matters
Alibaba is smart not to treat Qwen Code merely as a proprietary front-end for Qwen models. Welcoming rivals like DeepSeek and Kimi into the fold positions it as an open developer ecosystem rather than a closed playground.
Bundling into VSCode and fixing session persistence removes daily friction for coders. Still, with Cursor and GitHub Copilot dominating mindshare, winning developer loyalty will come down to how reliably Qwen Code handles real-world tool execution and complex codebases.
