Airbnb makes $200M bet on Siri cofounder's stealth AI startup
Airbnb just made its first acquisition as a public company, snapping up stealth AI startup Gameplanner.AI for just under $200 million. Cofounded by Siri creator Adam Cheyer, the team will help Airbnb build a generative AI 'travel concierge' that learns user preferences and matches them with the right stays.

Airbnb just broke a four-year acquisition drought to make its first buyout as a public company, and it is going all-in on conversational AI.
The vacation rental giant acquired stealth AI startup Gameplanner.AI in a deal valued at just under $200 million, according to sources speaking with CNBC. The move marks Airbnb's first acquisition since 2019, coming nearly three years after its IPO.
Gameplanner.AI has been operating completely under the radar since its founding in 2020. While the company kept its technology under wraps to protect its intellectual property, its pedigree is impossible to overlook.
A team behind Siri and Samsung's voice stack
The startup was co-founded by Adam Cheyer, one of the original minds behind Siri. After Apple bought Siri, Cheyer worked directly alongside Steve Jobs before leaving to co-found Viv Labs, the voice engine that eventually formed the bedrock of Samsung's virtual assistant.
Airbnb noted that bringing the Gameplanner.AI team onboard will directly accelerate several of its internal AI initiatives.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky has been clear about his ambitions for generative AI. He wants to overhaul Airbnb from a transactional booking engine into a personalized "travel concierge" that learns individual preferences over time and matches guests with the perfect stays.
Paying just under $200 million barely dents Airbnb's balance sheet. The company is profitable under GAAP and held $11 billion in cash and liquid assets at the end of September.
Why it matters
For everyday travelers, searching for lodging might soon look entirely different. Instead of endlessly scrolling through filters and photo galleries, you could soon talk directly to an AI that already remembers how you like to travel, matching you with the right rooms without the manual research.
For the broader travel and tech sectors, this acquisition shows that consumer platforms are shifting their AI bets from generic chatbots to specialized agent talent. With Google in talks to pump hundreds of millions into Character.AI, consumer tech is racing to lock down human-AI interaction pioneers.
We think buying Cheyer's team is a clever move. Cheyer has a proven track record of shipping mainstream conversational interfaces at both Apple and Samsung. Rather than trying to invent agent architectures from scratch, Airbnb is buying elite talent that knows how to turn complicated intent into clean software.
The real challenge will be execution. Voice assistants spent the last decade promising to become personal concierges, only to get stuck setting kitchen timers and reading the weather. Travel involves real money, real logistics, and high emotional expectations. If Airbnb's new AI makes a bad recommendation or hallucinates room amenities, travelers will quickly lose patience.
