AI21 Labs launches Wordtune Spices to co-write with sourced facts
AI21 Labs just rolled out Wordtune Spices, an AI co-writing feature that suggests sentences, statistics, and counterarguments inside your draft. Unlike typical text generators, it automatically adds links to its sources, acting as a fact-backed writing partner rather than replacing the writer.

Anyone who has used generative AI to draft an article or report knows the familiar dread: the prose flows effortlessly, but half the quotes and statistics are completely made up.
AI21 Labs is trying to fix that exact headache. The company just launched Wordtune Spices, an expansion to its popular Wordtune writing platform. Instead of attempting to ghostwrite entire documents from scratch, Spices acts like a sharp research assistant sitting next to you, feeding you arguments while pinning down the receipts.
Twelve flavors of assistance, backed by actual sources
Inside the editor, Wordtune Spices offers 12 different cues to enhance your text. When you hit writer’s block, you can ask it to expand on a thought, explain a tricky concept, bring in an analogy, or introduce a counterargument. If your draft feels dry, it can even throw in an inspirational quote or a light joke.
The real differentiator is how it handles facts. While popular tools like ChatGPT tend to spit out claims without any attribution, Spices links its quotes and statistics directly back to their original web sources so you can verify them on the spot.
That precision reflects AI21 Labs' broader engineering philosophy. Co-founder and Stanford professor emeritus Yoav Shoham has argued that language models are essentially statistical machines that do not truly comprehend anything. Instead of purely chasing model scale, AI21 combines its Jurassic-1 model with symbolic reasoning and live access to external data, calculators, and wikis.
Co-writing instead of replacing the writer
AI21 Labs co-founder Ori Goshen says the entire concept revolves around augmenting human writers rather than replacing them. The goal is to keep writers in control while lifting the cognitive burden of drafting and fact-finding.
Constellation Research analyst Andy Thurai noted that AI21 Labs is quietly standing out as one of OpenAI’s sharpest rivals, having built competitive capabilities at a fraction of the cost. He pointed out that Jurassic-1 can be fine-tuned with as few as 50 to 100 domain-specific examples. It is particularly strong at text transformation and shifting personas, letting users rewrite drafts to match an executive tone rather than generic output.
The tool is currently available directly in the Wordtune online editor and as an extension for Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft Word. It also embeds into platforms like Google Docs, LinkedIn, and Twitter, letting users tap into suggestions without leaving their workflow.
Why it matters
For students, marketers, and knowledge workers, this feels far more practical than standard prompt-and-pray generators. Professional writing rarely benefits from hands-off generation because checking an AI's hallucinations often takes longer than writing from scratch. Delivering sourced claims inside your existing draft genuinely speeds up the hardest part of writing.
We also think AI21 Labs is making a smart strategic bet against OpenAI. While the rest of the industry is obsessed with building ever-larger foundation models, AI21 is focusing on factuality and targeted interactions. Breaking down the writing process into discrete interventions keeps the human in the loop and limits uncontrolled model errors.
The challenge will be maintaining that accuracy as the company expands into high-stakes domains like legal and healthcare documentation. Linking to a live source is a great step forward, but evaluating whether that source is genuinely trustworthy remains the next hurdle to clear.
